I have been running a Yank 3000 for about two years with no problems whatsoever. Started with 3.15, went to 3.42 now running 3.73 rear gear. Have over 200 drag races combined. I noticed after a lot of trial and error that at launch I must keep the RPMs' below 1800 for best 60' times even with ET/Streets. The best 60' is 1.720 sec.. If I try to launch 1800 to 2000RPM the motor actually bogs. Actually launch from idle up to 1200 RPM seems best.
I want to get the 60' times down into the 1.6 range. My current peek HP range starts at 4400 RPM the current RPM drop at shift range is 4500. I can launch with NO TIRE SPIN at 12 to 16 lbs. of tire pressure.
SO THE QUESTION IS DO I GO TO 3500 or 4000 STALL CONVERTOR?????

JR:
Your a serious Chicagoland drag racer and i would upgrad to serious drag converter like a did, the Yank Prothruster 4000, with 2.75 str. This sucker hits like a ton of brick and i only have 4 passes at the track with mine so far and cut a 1.649 60 ft. I also have the 3.73s and the 4000 stall with this gear is 100% streetable and feels just like my old 3.42s with sy 3500 which i had before Chuck at FLP installed my new gears and converters a couple of months ago.
I say you step up to the plate and go for the gusto as this converter will get you exactly where you want to be. At a minimum, if you don't want to do the 4000 stalll then at least get the Yank Superthruster 3500 which also rocks. But why go to 3000 to 3500 when later on a next season you will be then wishing you would have stepped to a 4000 stall. Also,if you do bigger cubes/stroker in the future, the 4000 stall is a perfect choice for the stroker.
Well, I would say that you should get the SY3500 and TransGo, but since you are already using the 3000, I would definitely bump it up into the 4000+ stall range. However, you will be very pleased with the SY3500 if you choose that route.
Nitrovette - I thought Chuck at FLP preffers something other than Yank? I am not quite sure what that may be. What RPM can YOU launch at with your 4000 without bogging the motor? My Bracket Racing friends need at least 1500 RPMs' of "flash" to get their setups to work and mine seems to be that way also. I can launch at 1500 or less with good results on my SY3000.

Re: Help - Need Serious TC Input !!! (JR-CRUZN-C5)
Ask Mackeyred, Redgar, Or Gary Brown....with as much racing as you do the 4000-4400 is your TC! Get their opinions...they have all been there & done that.
Your 60-foot sounds a little bit off for your setup...With a PT 2400 and 3.42s I consistently 60-foot 1.78 on Nittos, and I'm not even tuned yet (+16 on my LTFTs  ). My engine is all-stock internally with a few bolt-ons. You may have another problem hiding in that car robbing you of some power.

Chuck at FLP when he chooses or recommends a converter it is always a VIGILANTE,which are also great converters. I have driven et streets all summer and put over 2K miles on them on the street and saw much more hot rodding and WOT launches at my local test and tune area near my home and new et streets were just ordered as my old ones are toast as the cords are starting to come thru.
I have not experience any bogging of my engine so far and that maybe b/c of my aggressive 4000 stall it am making gobs of torque for a heads/cam A4 coming out of the whole and when i pulled a 11.68 (on 1 of my only 4 passes with my new gears and converter) i was told by a witness a did not know that my front wheel came off the ground an inch or two.
Hope this helps and i think the only decision for you is to go with at least a 4000 stall as you are very serious like me about your drag racing and i recommend my converter as its a BEAR!
Goodluck and may see you next sunday at Byron hopefully.
Re: Help - Need Serious TC Input !!! (JR-CRUZN-C5)
I currently have a SY3500 in front of 3.73s. You do not want a SY if you're going for best possible short times. I'm sticking with my Pro Thruster recommendation. :) You're already understalled so you know that sucks. It would be difficult to overstall, you might consider steeping up to a slick.
Re: Help - Need Serious TC Input !!! (JR-CRUZN-C5)
I can tell you that the secret to a good 60' is the launch tecnique and equipment..but... the track must be well prepared as well..IMO :yesnod: I'm running a small PT2800 on Nitto DR's and with a long burnout I can get 1.66-1.67 short times all day.. This is on a clean VHT prepared track!:yesnod:
I 'm sure that will drop once I install the ST3500 and take advantage of some of the cooler air coming this fall..:D
Re: Help - Need Serious TC Input !!! (JR-CRUZN-C5)
Hi John. I just joined the ranks of the Yanks converters. I switched from PT 2900 to the Yank ST 3500. Hits a lot harder.
I have quite a few runs on the Pro Torque (>200) and it was fine but when I put the cam in the car I bogged a lot cause I wasn't hitting hard enough. My best 60 was 1.69 in great weather.
I have 3 runs on the Yank. From idle I bogged and from 1500 and 2500 I spun. So I really cannot offer much advice yet other then Gary Brown went to a bigger converter Yank 4000 Pro I think because mine (was his) wasn't enough for him (heads/cam and long list of other mods)
I have a post in the Drag Racing section on the Yank install stop in and check it out every once in a while to see how it goes.

Re: Help - Need Serious TC Input !!! (REDGAR)
John - if you have 200 passes at the strip, then you are a serious racer. I would HIGHLY recommend that you jump up to a 4000 stall converter - especially with the 3.73's.
If I had known then, what I know now, I would have gone right from the 3.15's and stock converter to the 3.73's and Prothruster 4200 that I have now. Instead, I went the intermediate route by upgrading to 3.42's and then tried a ProTorque 2400 and then a SuperThruster 3500 (now Redgar's). I could have save myself a lot of down-time and $$$$.
I would also recommend that you give Mike at YANK a call and ask any questions you have about upgrading your TC. Mike genuinely welcomes any and all questions and will help you get the right combination for your car and current mods. He does not believe that one size fits all. He helped me with my converter needs and I have yet to regret taking his advice. I did upgrade from the ST to the PT because my needs changed and Mike helped me chose a new TC that is now a perfect fit for street and strip.
I will definately be at Byron on Saturday (weather permitting) I wouldn't miss an oppurtunity to run the "BIG BOYS" of the forum. I think it should be a great time and very interesting.
I spoke with Dan and Chuck at FLP about my convertor dilema and they felt that since my next step is either a Magna... or a Pro-Charg... it might be better for me to wait until after the blower install due to the fact that the SC cars make power at lower RPM's hence my 3000 might be just right for the upcoming setup. NOW THERE IS HONESTY!!! They could have sold me a 3800 - 4200 convetor job now and a redo possibly after the SC install. HOW ABOUT THAT!!!

JR CRUZN:
Yeah the guys at FLP are great no doubt. I will be going there tommorow for a few dyno pulls to see what my air fuel ratio looks like and to see what i pull on their dyno with my 4000 stall and 3.73s. If your around, stop by the dyno at 9:30am as i look forward to meeting you.
I have ordered new et streets as my old ones were showing tread after one season and i hope to have them mounted in time for Saturday. If i know the guys at Powerhouse Performance who ordered my et streets and will get them mounted in time, i hopefully will be good to go on Saturday, which should be a large turnout of vettes no doubt. My biggest concern is hooking up as i had a hard time last outing with two out of the only 4 runs that i had (yes, even with the et streets) and i should of probably have upgrade to the Hoosier Full drag slick! The cooler air now and temps in the low to mid 40s when we run on saturday morning will probably make it even more difficult to hook up with the extra power were making and extra cold ground.
I ran at the Grove last Saturday and had serious problems with the 25MPH cross winds and 49 deg temps. I finally dropped tire pressure to about 12.5 - 13.0 lbs. and got some 12.0X runs in. The track was closed down for over one hour while they air lifted a guy out who crashed a 60's vette doing 126MPH and 11.25 with no roll bar ( I hope he is ok). This Saturday it is supposed to be sunny and in the 50's (Keep your fingers crossed). Dan at FLP needs to tweek my 2-3 shift point and wants to do it on Friday so I probably will not get over there tomorrow, but who knows.

"If I try to launch 1800 to 2000RPM the motor actually bogs. Actually launch from idle up to 1200 RPM seems best."
That doesn't make sense to me. If you leave from higher rpm's are you spinning the tires at all? It sounds as if you might be getting power reduction from torque management.
Through lower tire pressure I can keep the tires from spinning in most cases. With a small amount of TC flash the engine boggs. ie. the TC is a 3000, if I launch (with no tire spin) above 1500 RPM the engine will bog slightly. If I launch at or below 1500 RPM there will be no bog. My 60' times are 1.720 and I am trying to get them down into the 1.6 range which is the reason for this post. I can spin the tires all the way through first gear into second if I am not carefull.
Re: Help - Need Serious TC Input !!! (JR-CRUZN-C5)
Okay I got it. It seems your not high enough into the torque curve with the 3000. So, that's what is causing the bog. You need a higher flash or more gear or a controlled burnout. Think this sounds reasonable?
