Melting Slicks
normal in that they'll all likely make that noise at some point
The likely source is the gear that raises/lowers the headlight. It is nylon. Eventually, a few of the teeth strip. The sound you hear is the metal gear trying to turn the nylon gear, and bouncing over the stripped teeth on the nylon gear.
Its a relatively easy fix.
Check any number of vendors for C5 Headlight Gear. Get a brass replacement gear and you'll be good to go.

Drifting
The "growl" you're hearing is pieces of the gearing grinding when the gear reaches the damaged parts and begins to spin more freely as it's not hitting the worm gear. The gear needs replacement.
The gear is very easy to replace.
