Default MAF question

So today I decided to clean up my MAF, I recently bought my FRC and am trying to demystify a few of the cars mods as I perform my own with time.

that said, the MAF looks like this:

Is this the stock MAF for an 99 FRC? If it is, It’s mounted to a Hallatech Cold Air Intake, the car also has an LS6 intake. Is there a better MAF I should be using? I know there’s alternatives but I’m not sure which I should use in my situation.

Where is the MAF screen ??????....VERY important to have this screen installed on the MAF sensor...it straightens out the airflow going through it.....if you are not the original owner maybe previous owner removed it.

Yeah the absence of the screen is the primary reason I’m interested in replacing the MAF. Wanna make sure that I install a piece conducive to the existing mods.

But yes I assume the previous owner removed this, but I do want a unit which still has it as it was designed to be there.

I have an SLP Blackwing CAI installed on my '01...left the OEM MAF sensor installed...NO problems whatsoever...I stick with OEM on something like this but you can buy whatever you'd like !!

Thanks, I’ve spotted a number of options some cheap and some not so cheap. All claim better numbers than stock.

I didn't see that you are having problems with your MAF. If you are not getting a CEL for MAF problems your sensor is operating just fine. Save your money. The fact that someone removed the screen at one point doesn't make the MAF no good, per see, it just shows they didn't know what the thing does. You mention "All claim better numbers than stock". Better at what? It is simply a sensor that measures the amount of air coming into the engine, that is all.

yeah by all accounts it seems to be working just fine. I’m probably not going to replace it soon. I’ve got several other upgrades and replacements I wanna do beforehand.

I’d like full confirmation of that, but that might explain why it’s missing. My car has an LS6 intake they might have taken the MAF too?

or removed it to be consistent with Z06 conditions?

I think your housing is aftermarket... looking at your pics you can see where the sensor ends and there is a black piece on both ends protruding into the open area... if you look at a stock maf housing it fits flush with the edge of those black areas... so your housing probably opened up that area by maybe 5-6mm or so just guessing from the pics

Hmm, good eye. This is why I asked I knew I’d find good insight. Thanks! It does have a barcode on it I wonder i I might be able to use its corresponding numbers to figure out who the manufacturer is.

sure does look like it... now I would wonder if the tune was ever adjusted for that, your ls6 intake, and whatever else it has?

I was thinking that myself. I may have to contact the previous owner to see if he knows. Else may have to get the car tuned in the near future.

They were thinking "Gee, the Corvette has a relatively straight passage between the air filter and the MAF, so the screen isn't needed." Unlike the GM trucks and SUVs that use the same MAF with the screen because of the 90° bend between the air filter and MAF.
