johnfin - You think those yellow ramps are safer than 6-ton jack stands? I wouldn't get under a car that was on those ramps.
PLUS, it looks like those ramps were designed around a MUCH smaller tire...and I DON'T mean a narrower tire, I mean a smaller diameter tire. Those T/A's tires are barely captured in the radiused area of the ramp....
seriously bob. car falling off of ramps? they are opposing facing, ie no roll off. did you see the post where the guy lost a car on stands. i think best bet for additional protection is 3 ton floor jacks. they can roll and compensate for shifting movements. jacks would tip over.
inward meads first pic ramps are under wheels, next pic they are under the pucks.

I never commented on ramps...if you like them then use them. but dont forget that people have driven off of ramps......personally I dont have or use ramps any more and havent for the last 20 years... working under cars is inherently dangerous no matter what method you use. I have high confidence in how I use jack stands and generally if I am under it I use multiple jack stands.....I have 12 of them and some times even stick the tires under the car too
and i would never use hydraulic floor jack as additional protection....i may not remove it but i would never consider that as a safety.
sounds like you have a style that you are comfortable with and if it works for you good for you. good luck in your clutch swap, bob

Why don't you link that post? I'd bet he did something wrong in the placement or floor or had little baby stands at full height. You won't tip a 6-ton or 12-ton stand sitting on a flat concrete floor.
I wouldn't use a steel ramp that doesn't have another foot at the top of the ramp so the wheel is directly supported between 2 feet as well as some bracing like tie straps across the bottom of all 3 feet to ensure the feet can't fold. The best is likely ramps built using planks stacked and screwed together assuming they sit flat and the wheel has lots of flat plank to sit on. The wood can't collapse after all. But, the flat wood doesn't capture the wheel like a ramp with a wheel indent so rolling could be an issue. A quality respected name brand composite ramp would be OK too. I've seen crappy steel ramps like those yellow ones start to flatten out. In fact, if you compared them to a new ramp they likely have started already.
Opposite directions for the ramps don't keep you safe either. You've never seen a car go over the end or a ramp before?
And now you suggest a hydraulic floor jack as a safety device?

when I am working on my cars I always seem to have my wheels off more then I have them on so any type of ramp just never works for me....that's why I don't think a 4 post lift would work for me....so a 2 post asymmetrical lift is on the wish list...please Santa I have been good....
is this what you guys are talking about? hope not, i think these are garbage.

That is quite a jack stand, It would be nice to have another center post that had a flat pad with a pin that would lock in to your puck hole on the frame, I like the fact that the center post doesn't move around/wobble like some stands do.
Here is probably the same stands from Summit sold as a pair. Thanks for posting, I may look into these.
i like sunex tools, those certainly do look beefy...did you see the 22 ton jack stands....
I saw those as well, would be nice if they went higher than 19.7", I got a 10% coupon from Summit, I might order the 1310 from them best price I found yet.

as a fixed length you could just get some sections of a large I beam and weld plates to the bottom and top....it would never crush, weld easily and have as big of foot print as you want, and be pretty cheap too
4x4 hss @ 3/8 wall has a rating of 194kips. so the question to you is how many corvettes can i stack on top of mine and still be safe. i would add gusset plates from the legs to vertical.
Force numbers don't mean anything if the welds break or they tip over just as easily as a purchased axle stand.
Since you're worried about tipping, look at what is used for a office chair base and then rethink using 4 "legs" as the base.
An then at that point, don't forget a caster/wheel setup so you can easily move the 100lbs of stand you build. Heck, once you're going that far you might as well tie all 4 posts together with a big base and then get some good wheels and make the base movable both with or without the car on it.
