I know some of you all will say should of bought this that or the other but I have had my Indy's with X Pipe put on 150 miles ago and disapointed by the sound level as I thought they would be louder and have only heard 1 other C5 about 6 months ago and they seemed louder. I did check to make sure they were not the touring edition and said Indy Pace on the box. Maybe I was looking for more sound than what it is or do I need to get more miles on. I will be at a car cruise this weekend and listen to some other C5 cars. Just want to make sure there is nothing I did not do or expect and they are louder than stock. Thanks for the input and maybe I need to be outside the car to listen as I have only been the driver.
They won't change over time, so if you don't like them now, more miles won't help. Don't know what to tell you other than sell them on the forum and get something else.
Those Indys are a lot louder than you think, but you don't hear it inside the car. I just traded my SLP Loudmouth system even up for a 6-month old pair of Corsas, and I am SOOO much happier with the sound. When I had 2.73s, the resonance was not bad on the highway, but after the 3.42s the rpms moved up into the "resonance zone" at highway speeds. If you ever want to know what the SLP system sounds like, take off your mufflers and leave the pipes on, that's basically all the loudmouth is! If you want more aggressive, throw a post in the C5 Parts section and see if anyone will trade you Borla Stingers for your Corsas. The Borlas are more aggressive, but without the resonance of the SLP system. Good luck
Are you sure the C5 you heard didn't have the cats removed? Other mods also makes a big difference. When I first got my Corsa Indys I wasn't happy with the sound level either. I added TPIS long tubes, x-pipe, & removed cats= BIG DIFFERENCE! After heads and cam =BIGGER DIFFERENCE! After Stroker and bigger cam= BIGGEST DIFFERENCE! If you want loud then remove your cats but it will stink and you won't pass emissions or deal with the annoying resonance of the louder exhausts out there.
I do have the Indy with the cross pipe on my car. No headers or cam work done. It's loud and I love having the engine in the 3k-4.5k range where the Corsa Indy mufflers come alive. Step on the gas pedal hard and you'll hear the noise.
Had Corsa Indy's on my 01 6spd vert for about 1 week. Couldn't wait to get them off and install Stingers. Very disapointed with the weak sound comming from the Corsa's both at idle and full throtle. The Stingers are great. One thing I did notice is that a couple of guys in my vette club with older C5's( 98 & 99) installed Indys around the same time I did and they actually sounded more aggressive. Still not what I wanted but sounded better than my Indy setup. Go figure.
Tom,
I'll be happy to do a couple of WOT take offs in your car at Skyline Dr. this weekend for you so you can hear what they sound like from outside the car! :D :D
As some of you may know, GM is now an official Corsa dealer. My GM mechanic told me a few months ago that Corsa was going to begin to make the Indy's a bit softer than the originals. I can't verify this rumor is true, and I can't at the moment for the life of me remember the reason for the supposed change, but Tom's report would seem to verify the rumor.
Have Corsa's and xpipe w/ cats + headers, and ati sc. corsa kick in at around 2500-3000 rpm, and it's alot louder outside the car. heard my car Dyno tuned and I thought the window was going to break at 6200 rpm! stick with them!!
When you add the x-pipe along with a lil low end torque boost it quiets the exhaust down considerably along with dimishing the crackling...without the xpipe mod the Indys are considerably louder......it will also vary from x-pipe to x-pipe depending on the shape/size.
What price range is for headers and what does that do for the car?
I believe the core range for long tube headers is between $800-$1600. Not all headers are equal, but there isn't a huge difference between the hp you get out of them from what I can tell. Short tube headers are almost like a cross between a manifold and long tubes - a compromise. If you're going to spend money, long tubes are the way to go. I think the biggest difference between the less expensive and more expensive long tubes is appearance, installation, and build quality. Some of the more expensive ones include x-pipe and hi-flow cats.
Headers allow your engine to put more of the power it makes into turning the flywheel instead of pushing out exhaust gasses. In essence, they reduce the load on your engine, allowing more power to make it's way to the wheels. Incidentally, they make your engine more efficient, because instead of using more fuel to effectively get more power, they make your engine make better use of the same amount of fuel. This is the major reason intake/exhaust mods are frequently the first mods that are made to a car.
Re: HEADERS - Can you still pass emissions after headers and an X-pipe?
I was told by a local vendor that after installing headers and an X-pipe I might not pass Mass emissions. This took my initial enthusiasum way down.
Anyone know what the story is on this?
I had TPIS headers installed along with my Corsa Indy Exhaust & Bossani X-pipe. The headers make the difference. I've heard many cars with just the exhaust & x-pipe and I agree, it needs to be louder. With the headers it has a nice "rumble" at idle and low RPM's, but when you put the hammer down, everyone know's your coming!!!
IMO, the X-pipe MAY tone down the exhaust note (I like the pops), but there is a world of difference when you're actually behind the car.
Plus I noticed, after switching mine from the '98 to the '02 they seem a bit quieter....,must be the pre-cats.
