Default How to remove automatic gear shift ****?

The gear shift linkage on my 2003 Anniversary automatic transmission has snapped and will not shift out of park. I am trying to remove the gear shift **** so that I can remove the center console. I have removed the push button and the manual says that the **** should unscrew. I have applied twisting pressure, but the **** will not turn. I am afraid to apply too much pressure and break something. Am I missing something or is it just hard to unscrew? Thanks,

Ken

I see no retaining clips. Does this just unscrew?

I'm afraid you unnecessarily complicated yourself. Usually the shifter cable is fine and it is just a broken bushing at one of its ends. As you can see in the pictures below, there's no need to dismantle the **** to remove the center console and replace the bushing.

In my case, the bushing on the console's end of the cable was the one that disintegrated, but I replaced the bushings on both ends for peace of mind. I'm glad I did because the one on the transmission's end disintegrated in my hands just by looking at it

It's true that one have to be careful not to bend this cable too much, but what you can safely flex it, is enough to replace the bushing. I took these pictures when I replaced mine:

After inserting the new bushing:

As mentioned above, even though at this point most probably only 1 gave up, take the opportunity and replace bushings at both ends.

All you need is the
Dorman 14057 Dorman 14057
kit ($12 and free 2-day Prime shipping from Amazon). Use the white bushings (the orange ones are for Ford):

And
shows you how to do it.

This is very doable and it's just a few bucks and a couple of hours to change the bushing at both ends of the cable, taking your time

Thanks to everyone for all the information. I ordered the correct replacement bushings from Eckler’s. I placed the linkage end loosely over the ball, then I snapped the bushing over the linkage ball. The bushing is compressed around the ball by snapping the bushing into the linkage housing. I have check the connection several times over the past week and it seems to be holding tight.

Overpriced replacement bushings?... There's no doubt about it. Corvette tax at its best: $26 + $10 shipping is 3 times what the Dorman kit costs at Amazon ($12 and free 2-day Prime shipping).

Correct replacement bushings?... Not so sure. The OEM ones do not have any splitting cut to facilitate installation, which could also compromise safety and a long lasting repair.

Hope they continue to hold tight.

The clip for the shift **** is like a large staple. It's located at the lower front edge of the know. Look closely, because it's black, and matches the know color closely. As previously posted, it doesn't absolutely need to be removed......
