hello all .
I have a completely stock 1999 c5 manual trans.and I have a question.
After reading up on clutch replacement . It seems to be an easier fix by pulling the motor rather than jacking the car up high enough to pull the entire drive train. with the added benefit of being able to clean things up under the hood. Am I missing something
I have done the clutch twice on my car on jackstands by myself with no help. It really isn't that bad of a job in my opinion. I did it over a weekend and took my time, I also bought the motorcycle ATV jack from harbor freight which really helped. I recommend buying yourself a flywheel turning tool, and if you can find it an old input shaft for clutch alignment. I think pulling the motor out the top would be more difficult, everything on the C5 was meant to come out the bottom. Good luck with whichever way you decide to tackle it.
Definitely do it from the bottom. I have done about 5-6 clutch installs on C5/C6's. They all come apart pretty easy. I usually drop the rear cradle out, then moved the rear end, trans, and torque tube as one whole piece.
I gave very serious thought to replacing the clutch by pulling the engine. A LOT has to come out to get the engine out from the top when you look closely at it. Bottom was easier.
If you ever go to Bowling Green Factory, the ENTIRE drive train (engine, TT, Trans, Diff, gets install from the bottom as an assy.
Its MUCH easier to remove the TT/TRANS & DIFF as an assy from the bottom. I always reassemble by removing the TT from the TRANS/DIFF and installing the TT into the bell housing/clutch. Its SO SO SO much easier!!!! Installing the TRANS/DIFF back onto the TT is NOT difficult either if you use that motorcycle jack! You will need a small jack or jack stand to support the rear of the engine. I used an old scissor jack supported by some 4X4 and 2X4 spacers.
While the differential is out, I HIGHLY recommend installing new diff output shaft seals. You will also need a new differential to transmission O ring and the proper sealer compound.
As BLUEWIRE stated, I did the entire job all by my self on jack stands. It was actually quite a fun job.
