Default Anyone torque their oil filter?

The manual says 22 ft lbs. I started to torque it but the can began to deform. I remember oil filters always saying hand tighten only.

Most oil filter manufacturers will have something like spin the filter on until the gasket contacts the filter flange then turn an additional 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. Just make sure the filter gasket is free of any debris, clean and dry the mounting flange and a light coating of engine oil is applied to the rubber gasket. Some people with strong hands could easily exceed the required level of tightness and ruin the gasket.

I always turn 3/4 to 1 full turn once the gasket of the filter contacts the sealing surface. As far as I have ever seen, any quality oil filter manufacturer has a printed on the oil filter the step by step instructions for tightening.

And always make sure the old filter's gasket has been removed. A neighbor of mine was changing his truck's oil and he didn't know the old gasket was still on when he put in the new filter. He came to ask for my help. I couldn't believe how much oil he spilled in his driveway.

I'm a torqing fanatic, but no. Light coat of oil on new gasket, contact, another 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

As already said, oil the gasket and hand tighten.

Ensure old filter gasket is not on mount flange, lubricate new oil filter gasket with oil, hand tighten to snug, turn extra 3/4ths inch.

My neighbor did the same thing. Pumped out about 3 quarts in no time flat. What a mess.

Don't know where you got your torque spec. from. The factory repair manual says tighten it 3/4 to 1 full turn after the gasket makes contact with the block.

You must have a different manual than me.

I bet its 3/4 of a turn....I put blue tape on mine so when the gasket hits the mounting flange know easily where the 3/4 turn goes to...

Good question, I never really thought to check it, won't be doing an oil change til spring 2019 so we will have to wait for that answer.

Manual does say 22 ft lbs. Not sure torquing wrench is as accurate in the lower number. Best to fill oil filter completely with oil, making sure the old oil filter gasket is not left on, oil the new gasket and screw it on 3/4 turn after filter makes contact.

I always make it hand tight, then use a strap wrench to turn 1/4 turn from there. Never had a single problem.
