My '02 Coupe burns approx. 1 quart of oil every 3-4000 miles. Dealer says this is normal. Now if I do an oil change as per the DIC every 10-12000 miles, that's 4 quarts out of the 6.5 need to fill
What do you guys do to fix this problem, and how did you diagnos it? :nopity
If not..Then it is getting past the rings and burning.
Did you ever break in your engine hard? If not you may want to try it.. Take it for a few WOT runs right to REDLINE...
The rings are very hard.
Some guys with buring oil probably did not seat the rings on the motor.
Mine was the same and I had them change out the rings. Tell your dealer there is a service bulletin from GM on this. They should fix it with out a problem. They may make you do an oil consumption test but if it is burning that much then, they should replace the rings.

Re: Oil Consumption??? (MVP)
Doubt GM will fix rings if it is burning a quart every 3-4000 miles. Their guidance, at least when I had my ring job done (November 2001) was that if you burned greater than a quart every 2000 miles, you may have a problem. I was burning a quart every 1200 or so miles, so I got the rings replaced.
While it would be nice if no oil consumption occurred, your's does not seem excessive. I change my oil at 4000-5000 miles so I would never experience an interval of 10000-12000 miles between changes. When I hit the 4000 mile mark, my DIC usually reads about 25% oil life remaining.
I feel it is better to change then than wait for the DIC to tell me to do it. Wouldn't want 10000 miles on an oil change anyway. If you want to wait that long, just add a quart when it gets low. The DIC should tell you when you get a little below a quart low, at least mine does.
My rings were changed for this. I found that my consumption, as GM has suggested, depended on the typical RPMs I used. For many who drive 6-speeds, they tend to average a higher RPM and, hence, this is a bigger issue for those cars. Where I heavily disagree with GM, however, is they assert that usage is in folks who very typically cruise around at 4k RPMs. I never drove like that, but with occasional spirited driving, my usage went way up. Alternatively, if I did drive like GM suggested, then that too made my usage go way up (2 quarts per 1k miles).
Since my re-ring, I haven't checked the dipstick, but my chrome exhaust tips have stayed clean, whereas before the re-ring they always were black. Good luck.
I have used a quart every 2,000 to 2,500 miles since new. But now all of a sudden at 24k it seems it has stopped using oil. I will keep you posted. I intend to change oil this weekend. :yesnod: :seeya
I have an automatic and burn 1 quart every 1100 miles. I also always drive around town in 3rd.
I believe the problem is not going to high rpms under load, it is the opposite. Using the engine to slow down from high rpms. As this type of driving is mostly MN6 guys that is why they typically have the problem.
In an A4, if in Over drive the engine is disengaged when "coasting" to a stop so the problem does not show up. However when in 3rd, you can feel the engine is still engaged and actually brakes the car much like an MN6 when down shifting to help slow the car without using much brakes. It is these higher rpm levels under almost negative load that is the condition where the "old" rings have their problem.
Just my opinion - no real facts.
I was told that the threshhold was 1 qt every 1,000 miles or so. I go in Nov 4th for my ring job.
