My engine light has gone on and a friend of mine checked the code with his scanner and found it to be k0442. He said that it’s the Evap system but I can’t find anymore info about the code.
It’s a P0442 and without a bi directional scan tool and a smoke machine you’ll never find that small leak...best thing is take it to a shop if you don’t have that diagnostic equipment !!
The cheapest/quickest cause of this is a leaking gas cap. Look for any broken hoses in the evap system. Past that as stated a smoke machine is needed to properly diagnose. It puts smoke into the system so the leak will become visible.

Yes, could very well be a bad gas cap...it would take all of about 5 minutes to diagnose this if it were a gas cap...less time than to run to the parts store and back...a broken hose would throw a P0455...small leaks can sometimes be VERY difficult to diagnose !!

what’s the best way to determine if the gas cap is leaking?
You can examine the sealing surfaces of the cap and the lip on the car that it seals against. Damage is usually obvious. Or just replace the cap as it is only about a $15 part.
can I get a new cap at any after market store or do I have to get it from a Chevy dealership?

Do this test the "old school" way in your drive way with a friend. You will need a cigar and a six pack of beer.
First disconnect the vacuum line from your vacuum booster for your power brakes. Light the cigar (the smellier and smokier the better) and get her going so the smoke is roaring. Get a big mouthful of smoke and blow into the end of the vacuum line. Do this several times making sure to continue to fill up your engine intake. If you have a leak, the smoke will begin to spurt out of the hole. You have found your leak
The buddy is there for laughs and the beer help to rinse out your mouth from all that gross cigar taste. I;ll recommend Shiner Ruby Red (with grapefruit) as the citrus does a pretty good job.

Does anyone know more?
Just try taking the gas cap off and re-tightening it. Sometimes that is all you need to do.
Next thing would be to get a new gas cap.
9 times out of 10, that is all that the problem is.

How about I drink the beer and YOU smoke the cigars...you’ll be going through a LOT of cigars...LOL !!..unfortunately the brake booster vacuum system and the EVAP system are not interconnected !!...The EVAP test port (Schrader valve-L/H threads) is on the left side of the engine near the EVAP purge valve...(the engine intake vacuum IS downstream of the normally closed purge valve though)... also the vent valve will have to be closed with a bi-directional scanner to close off the system and smoke test !!!!...hope they’re Cubans !!

If you don’t have a smoke machine to test just fire the parts cannon and change it and cross your fingers !!...you can get an OEM cap for about $20.00...it might look fine but might still be defective !!
