Did a oil change the other day and decided to cut open my filter and noticed some metal. I know there is always going to be metal shavings to some degree in the oil but this seemed to be a little much in my opinion. What do you guys think? This oil had less than 1k miles on it (had to change it bc I used seafoam in the oil). I have a magnetic drain plug and had fine shavings on it but not any chunks. Oil pressure is good and runs/idles fine. Doesnt throw any codes. I do have a lifter tapping pretty loud on every crank until it reaches op temp then goes away. I'm just hoping these metal flakes aren't a cam lobe. Opinions?
My gut says you are probably ok but you need to keep an eye on it. You never mentioned the miles on the engine?
Remember, you put the SeaFoam in the system to loosen up trapped debris (gunk, metal shavings...etc) and trap them in the filter. So, far the product worked as intended.
Now, you just did an oil change, so drive another 1000 miles and pull apart the filter and see if there are any shavings. You will know what to do after that.

Sorry I did forget that. It's a 2003 with 70k miles.
I would order a free oil sampling kit from Blackstone Labs and send them an oil sample on your next oil change. It will cost $28 for the report. I did it last year and got some interesting information.

Good idea... was there something in particular that made you do it or just for the heck of it?
I did it mainly out of curiosity having owned my C5 for only a year at the time. I found out my oil had higher than normal copper content. BL said they thought it was due to the low miles and cam bearing wear which is common to LS1 engines.
So guys according to the pics would you say I got an issue or prob normal to have a little metal?
Some big piece's for metal in that filter. Like the one guy has said the next oil chg I would do this again & see what that shows you & take it from that...Robert

I went through the filter to get a better look and feel of the metal. Not of it is metal chunks they are all very thin shavings.
I woudnt worry about that one bit. 70? Drive it
Most these make some crazy lifter noise sometimes. Almost convinced I have a bad lifter at 180k, oil is clean. At this point why worry.
It's possible the metal chips could have been in the filter from there manufacturing process, what brand filter ? Maybe go with A/C Delco or Wix filter.

So guys since these flakes aren't magnetic what all could it be? Bearings? I pulled the driver valve cover this evening and cranked it up. I have confirmed that it is not a collapsed or bleeding down lifter like I thought it might. All rockers are getting oil fine and there is no manual movement in the pushrods. The metallic tapping sound I have on cold starts sounds like it's in the bottom end of the motor. Where the hell do I go from here? Putting seafoam in the oil quietened the tapping down a bit, changed oil and now its back to tapping loud like it was before... I would imagine a damaged lifter roller wouldn't sound better then the motor heats up like mine does.
