Default C5 problems

i have a 1998 c5 when I bought it . And I drove the car cold all my gears worked fine , once the car was warmed up and I’ll stop , it will go from first to fourth so I got the tranny rebuild from a guy that does most of my rebuilts On tranny’s his always done them fine . Once it got rebuilt i drive it and it did the same thing from first to fourth . I change transmission senloids and third started to work as well now it’s just second that it skips. Has anybody had this problem or have and idea of what can it be . I’ve been told to change the computer on it but don’t want to waste money on it and not get the problem fix .

At first I thought you were joking, but It seems like you are serious. Look in your owners manual or google online for CAGS or Skip Shift. It's a gas saving feature that forces you to shift from first to fourth under certain conditions. Most people hate it but it can be eliminated with a $20 kit. CAGS was in every 6 speed manual starting in 1989.

Have you checked the trans fluid level? Low fluid could cause this since it would maintain good pressure until it got heated up and then couldn't provide enough pressure. Does the trans fluid smell burned? Is it red or brown? What is indicating it is skipping from 1st to 4th?

In addition to the fluid level, the pump could going out, burned bands, a blocked strainer (that should have be caught during the rebuild), or other issues. What all was done when the trans was rebuilt? I noticed you had it rebuilt but then still changed our solenoids.

I believe if you just paid to have your transmission rebuilt you should return it to the shop that did your work and have them correct the problem.

The FILL PROCEDURE for the C5 Auto is quite unique!! If it wasn't filler exactly as defined in the service manual, it will be LOW and effect proper operation and transmission internal hardware longevity.
