Default 2000 C5 with Z06 Wheels; TPMS Solution...

2000 C5 FRC.*Bought some C5 Z06 wheels (w/no tpms obviously) and will get new tires to handle new 434 motor being built by AHP.*I do not want TPMS lamp on all the time (it cannot be disabled on < 2000 MY vehicles from what I read here)*Can I just buy new TPMS sensors (2000 C5 kind) and then have a tire shop install them with the new tires and be good to go ?How can they be activated ? Thanks boys.

I run Forgelines on the track without the sensors and have never had a light come on. Mine is also a 2000.

I now have a plan (hope there is no code thrown) and a back-up plan (install Delco sensors and set it up).

I added OEM, Z06 wheels and tires (Goodyear Supercar) to my 2000 hardtop when I purchased it in 2004. I bought new sensors instead of reusing the originals as other folks here were beginning to have sensor problems then and I didn't want to have to R&R the tires in a year or two. 14 years later and the sensors are still reporting for duty! 😀

I'd better go find some wood to knock on...

Good luck... GUSTO

Agree with 8VETTE7 on the better TPMS sensors. They should last 8-12 years so the few extra dollars spent for the Schraders or ACDelcos is a cheap investment.
Best of both worlds. You don't have any potential lights kicking on while you are tracking, but you still know if you ever have a tire going low when you're out for a fun drive.

you won't get a 'light' per se, but there'll be a service message on the DIC to clear every power cycle of the ignition.
that worldwide auction site does have some vendors selling the 97-00 style Schrader sensors $170 for the set (and Discount Tire can match that if you want to buy them local)

Just use your stock sensors from your original wheels. I bought 4 rear C5 Z06 wheels for my 2000 FRC and am using the stock sensor/valve stems. They work perfect. No issues.

Schrader part number 28006 are the best price for decent quality I've found for the 1997-2000 Corvettes. I got mine for less than $170 for all 4. I can honestly say that they outlasted the car! Although to be fair, my 99 was totalled about 2 weeks after installing them. However, I did a bunch of research before I bought those and they seem to be the go to TPMS sensor for the early c5s.

Also, you don't have to change tires to have them installed. Most tire shops will replace them without changing the tire, it's not difficult, you just have to break the bead. But since you are getting new tires anyways, they will install the TPMS sensors for you for, likely for pretty cheap, maybe even free.

The Schrader 28006 TPMS sensors activate using a magnet, just as the stock ones did. If the shop doesn't do it for you, you can do it yourself very easily. There are plenty of posts/videos describing how to do it.

Also, if the light is bothering you and you want it to go away temporary until you get the sensors in. You can simply go through the DTC's on the driver information center and clear the codes for the TPMS sensors. You will probably see at least a few of these codes under RFA:

C2100 Left Front TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2105 Right Front TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2110 Right Rear TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2115 Left Rear TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2120 TPM System Malfunction (No Sensors Received)
C2121 TPM System Programming Malfunction (No Sensors Programmed)

Simply hold the reset button and clear these codes, they should go away and the light will stay off for a while. But they will eventually come back. When they do, just clear them again, it only takes 30 seconds. I'd imagine this would work for your 2000, as it worked with my 99 with no TPMS sensors, and now my 01 with four dead batteries in the sensors.

Here's a video on how to get/clear codes through the DIC if you aren't aware. Hope this all helps!

What light are you talking about? There is simply a message on the dic which will go away with a quick push of the reset button. There is no reason to delete the codes.

Yes, the "Service Tire Monitoring Syetem" message pops up every time you start the car, clearing the code will make it not pop up for a good while, at least in my experience.

Schrader made the stock sensors, regardless of whether they said Delco or not.

One other thought. Now that TPMS is required on all cars, give it a few years and I bet not having TPMS will be a real problem if you want to sell the car.
