well here is the story, my ac/heater control module did not light up.. i watched a YouTube and got some YouTube confidence that i could fix the issue. well i didn't. i re soldered the 8 tiny boxes for the display, while i was in there i changed all the bulbs. after i did all this i put everything back together and installed in the car, as soon as i started to hook up the unit i seen smoke coming from the unit and i unplugged it, it was pretty instantaneous as the plug was not all the way in.
now...
i took it all apart, re looked at all the connections that i made, cleaned some of them up. now when i put it in the car i do not get any smoke. i don't get anything. the unit does not work at all now. i checked fuse number 18 and 27 in the foot well, both 10 amps.. both are good. did i burn up my unit or is there another fuse somewhere i have not checked?
I'm thinking it's time for a visit to the parts for sale section, ebay, or vettenuts. I seem to recall there are differences between 2000 and before vs 2001 and later. But do research before buying.
now on to the next question, i have ordered the new unit, spent 420 bucks, ouch... ok ok.. breath...
i am good now..
question when i plug the new unit in i am expecting it to work from the get go. if i checked the fuses in the footwell and there is no blown fuses there, then i should be good to go and not have messed anything else up in the Vette, correct? is there anything i should be checking before now and then that would tell me i need to address something else?
Assuming that it was your soldering on the first unit that caused the short, then yes, you should be good to go. It is very unlikely that such a short would have damaged any wiring as the circuit board gave up the ghost long before wiring would have become hot enough to do damage.
If, on the other hand, you have reason to believe there may be problems elsewhere, you may want to check the wiring first before plugging in a new $400+ electronic part. Specifically, I would be checking input voltages to the new unit. You would need a wiring diagram and/or troubleshooting guide from the service manual to know expected voltages. Not every circuit in the car is a 12V circuit. It may be that all the ones going to this unit are 12V, but without a manual/diagram no way to know for sure.
thanks for the reply! i am sure it was the soldering, it was working fine before, just didnt have any lights. again thanks for the reply! i will keep everyone posted
so i ordered the new unit, 420 bucks! installed and working as it should. only complaint i have with the new unit was the buttons had some wear on them and you could see slight omitting from them. so i changed my original buttons on my unit with the new unit and it is perfect now. thanks for the quick replys on this. a great forum to read day in and day out.
