I have an 03 M6 that occasionally wants to die while coming up to stoplights. I coast up and the RPM wants to dip to around 500 or so then it climbs back up to a stable 8-900. Then when I pulled in to work and turned to pull into the parking spot it dies. No codes whatsoever. But I do get the faint smell of funky exhaust. The kind my truck would give me when the carbon canister emissions was acting up. The dealership I bought it from had replaced all of the plugs and had the ECM reflashed because it wouldn’t read the ECM after 350 miles of driving. But this issue existed before and after. Any ideas?
Yeah everything is good from the filter to the throttle body. Additionally the mechanic at the dealership had cleaned the throttle body. I’m thinking maybe vacuum related to the MAP sensor? Strange though no codes.
it is pretty much stock except the K&n air filter.
The initial issue was a P0101 code. I replaced the MAF but couldn’t get the ECM to reset so it would pass emissions regardless of the hundreds of miles I put on her. That’s when I gave the car back to the dealership who eventually took it to Chevrolet to reflash the ECM. Currently there are no codes popping.
You should never have a dying issue on a stock engine-----Now if your engine is modded the more mods you have the more it would have a tendancy to either dye or to "hang" at idle
This would be coreectable with tuning
I suspect something else as mentioned PLUS
Intake vacuum leak-----( check the PCV system and the AIR pump hose connection)
Fouled MAF sensor from over oiling or water
Bad MAP sensor
Do you have a scan tool or know someone who does ??...pretty easy diagnosis with one and well, not so easy without one. With that smell you're getting it's probably running "pig rich" and the PCM is pulling fuel...looking at the upstream O2's and fuel trims would be the ticket !!
No I don’t have a true scanner tool. Just one that can pull codes, that’s it. Anyone recommend one?
It depends on your budget...you can get a “Chinese Clone” Tech 2 (GM’s factory scan tool) on EBay for $300-400 or so...genuine ones go for between 3-4 grand !!
Check your ignition switch. I know this sounds stupid, but I had the EXACT same issue in my 2001 Silverado a few years ago, had to rev it to keep it from dying at the lights. Called my good buddy who was the Lead tech at the local Chevy dealer, he told me that with no hesitation, and I would have bet a paycheck it was fuel related. It turned out it was the ignition switch.
Here’s an interesting development. It’s been almost 665 miles since the ECM flash with no check light. Driving in to work this morning and it pops up. Here’s the kicker. Whenever, even prior to the reflash, the car would run a little rough or anything, it would only do it on the highway and only in fourth gear around 3 grand. No other gear mind you, just fourth. This morning I was in fourth and boom, check engine. I ran a diagnostic while driving and I only get a Historic P0101 (MAF) and a Current P0801 (reverse solenoid) which I already knew about. The MAF I have on there currently is the cheap off brand off of Amazon. I do have a new Delphi one at the house which I’ll swap out this afternoon. Weird why it only does it in fourth because it shouldn’t matter.
It all has to do with the engine "LOAD" and not necessarily the gear !!...would probably be a good idea to check the MAF wiring before installing that new OEM sensor !!
The stock GM MAF is good for approx 500 crank HP There is NO advantage to going to anything else either larger diameter or so called "performance MAF" The MAF sensor is just that ----it reads incomimg airflow and there is no HP advantage by changing it unless you outgrow it which only happens with HP over 500 crank HP The only true way to know if you combination has outgrown the stock MAF is to data lof your MAF table with appropriate software---
In your application I would put the STOCK MAF back in---The codes you are getting are false codes due to the horrible aftermarket MAF's
If you go to any speed shop and look in their trash can you will see it is full of Granitelli MAFs or Ebay MAFs----it takes hours and hours of data logging and tuning trial and error to make these non stock MAF's work And if you do sort them out the HP advantage in almost NIL or even less--tham before
