Default Steering Rack Question

Does anyone know the purpose of this cast looking nub on the back side of the power steering rack?

That is a rivet that holds the 2 piece rack housing together.

Thanks.

Will grinding it down like this cause a problem?

It's still solid and not leaking.

Thanks again steering_experts1 for identifying this part. Based on some rivet examples below I believe this would have been a solid rivet with a high cambered or flat head. The semi-circular shape is most likely where I have ground this down enough to expose part of the rivet shaft. I think there is still enough of the flange or head of the rivet in place to keep this from backing out. Do you agree or should I put a tack weld on there for extra security?

I am putting a 1/4" thick motor plate on the car and had to space the balancer out 1/4" to get it to align with the power steering and alternator. This rivet was going to make it very hard to slide the belt between the pulley and steering rack for installation as seen in the picture below.

In my opinion, it shouldn't be a problem

We don't recommend removing the rivet, or grinding it down. The rack housing is mounted solid only on one side, if the rivet comes out the rack housing can separate. Also, there is a seal right by the rivet and grinding that down may damage the seal from the heat generated.

I would certainly agree, however, the fox is in the hen house so let's wish him well on this. Perhaps a little epoxy?

Thanks, I'm hoping so.

I'm not planning to remove it but it's already ground down for clearance. It appears there is enough left to keep it intact. Also, the C5 rack is mounted to the cradle in two locations. The plan is to keep watch on it during the initial road test.

Here is a picture showing the rack is mounted to the cradle in two locations. The rivet is in between these two fixed points.
