I have a friend with a 2002 Z06 with 40K that grinds going into second gear and will pop out of second gear.
Is this a transmission, clutch or a shifter problem?
I haven't driven the car to be more definitive about the condition.

You can download a Service Manual for the T56 from Tremec for free! which has info on Disassemble/Repair/ T56 On-Vehicle Service and Troubleshooting.
Make sure you get the T-56 Service Manual TRSM-T56-0711 http://tremec.com/lit_oem.php=left
The manual is good -- but I've never heard of a clutch or even a shifter problem causing a tranny to pop out of second. I mean, sure, my Dad fixed a three-on-the-tree with a five pound shift **** once, but that won't work with a floor shifted 6...

check the bolt that holds the linkage to the shifter box, make sure it isn't loose or worn out and allowing excessive play... also check the shifter box alignment... if the problem only persists in 2nd gear then it is probably a trans issue but the things I mentioned to check are easy and free so I would rule those out first if it were me
The nubs on the 2nd gear and the synchro collar (not to be confused with synchronizers) are worn. That’s due to aggressively shifting into 2nd gear at redline over 40k miles. When the gearbox comes apart (which is needed to correct this) you’ll find that the same aggressiveness that killed 2nd, has also to a lesser degee eaten 3rd gear. -but 2nd is acting up first because it’s been used more and taken more abuse.
2nd gear from Tremec costs $311 and the 1/2 synchro assembly costs $125. What’s going to kill you is the labor.
My build started a couple months ago but hasn’t been finished as I’m basically upgrading everything in it to the tune of over $2k parts alone. Other life priorities have taken up my time. Should be done next month.
Also it’s rare but the 1/2 shift fork is aluminum and can bend slightly. It’s only $17 so I’d change it too when doing the rest.
