After sitting a couple days, the car starts but there's an exhuast/engine rattle that goes away, sound slike asomething closes, after warmup. However, if during this 'rattle' phase you try to turn the car off, it won't turn off! Even when removing the key. Now, today, the rattle noise was at startup but engine wouldn't fireup and car wouldn't shut down. After I jiggled the ignition a couple times, the engine fired up ok. What the heck could this be???
Sounds like a bad ignition switch...if I had a dollar for every bad C5 ignition switch I'd be living in a mansion in Beverly Hills !!...don't know about this rattling sound....don't know what you were saying by... "the rattle noise was at startup but engine wouldn't fireup and car wouldn't shut down".....if it didn't fire up at startup how could it have NOT shut down...you mean it was a "cranking no start" that kept cranking ??????????
Hi, thanks for the reply. Its hard to describe. At start up, when engine is cold, there's a rattle like an exhaust vent or something is open. After warm up, that rattle goes away, seems like something closes. As for this time, when I went to start the car, the engine didn't fire up but the electrical system was cranking. Tried to turn the car off but the 'cranking' kept going. Once I toggled the ignition the engine fired up. sorry for not being better at describing the darn thing. Almost 20 yrs old and its hardly ever given me any problems. Only 49000 miles! Convertible to!
The rattling can be the secondary air pump which stays on for the first few minutes and shuts off when engine gets warm. The issue you are having with not turning off is something else. I would retrieve the codes from the DIC.
That might point you in the right direction
To put the AIR pump question to bed just pull relay #33 (under hood fuse box) and see if it goes away...if it is it just put your ear near the left front tire...it's in that area !!...as far as the starting issue I'd still say it the ignition switch...I just changed mine (52,000 miles) 2 months ago for a "no crank- no start"
OK, thanks for all the feedback. I got the codes, none seem to indicate the problem. They were all History codes: A6 SCM: B2605H, B2860H, B0 RFA: U1096H, U1064H, and U1016H. A0 LDCM: B2284H
I did change the battery a couple months ago.
OK, I'll try the fuse next. I did start up the car today, same rattle in front end. Opened hood to see if I could isolate it,seems to be near the center. Rattle continued in idle mode. Wouldn't shut off until I hammered the accelerator.
Hi, OK, I removed relay 33 and problem still there, so guess that's not an air pump issue. Turns out this time again when the 'rattle' was going on and I turned the car off, the engine does turn off but the electrical system seems to be the thing thats chattering, making the car not completely shut off. Darn if I can explain this properly.
As the chattering is still going on, I reengage the ignition to start and the engine does start right up but the rattle/chattering stays until warm up and I hit the accelerator. Then it seems to 'close' like a flap and the problem goes away.
