I am installing a new LS3 crate engine in my 1998, C5, A4. The paper work included with the crate engine said that any parts needed should be ordered for a 2014 SS. The problem is that anything I have tried to order for the SS does not seem to fit that LS3. I would like to place a new starter while everything is apart but, I am unsure what to order. I have seen various sites that sell the same starter for nearly all LS engines, yet Rockauto lists different starters for my 98 LS1, and a 2008 - 2012 LS3. I thought I would try my existing starter from my LS1 but, even if it fits, it does not guarantee it will work properly. I am leaning toward buying a starter for a 2012 LS 3 but, if anyone has an idea what I should use, it would appreciated.
I’m my research of prepping for my swap of a LS376/480HP Crate Motor. The engine document has the following info; NOTE I have not verified this starter part number info!
Starter
The LS376/480, LS376/525 crate engine does not include a starter. Chevrolet Performance Parts part number 10465385 is matched to this application and is recommended. See your Chevrolet Performance Parts dealer for details.Doc attached.
Be very interesting to know how you sorted out this issue and what part number starter should be used?Goose

That is the same part number that came with the included paperwork with my crate engine. The thing is that if you go to a on-line parts store, like Rockauto, you will see that is not the part number for a 2014 SS, as advised in the paperwork. Additionally, the starter for that 2014 SS has an additional plug (female, I think) which I don't know what it is used for. I called Lingingfelter, Skogin Dicky, and several other places I thought could help, without success. The tech from Injection Connection was extremely knowledgeable, and helpful. He said not only does the starter have to physically bolt up but, the computer must read the correct voltage (I believe it was 11.3 volts), or it will not start, even if it spins over. So, it must be the correct starter. I think I will either use my starter from my LS1,or try to find a picture of part 10465385 to see if it has the correct wire terminals. You will have to figure out all this for your swap as well. What are you doing for the knock sensors? The harness I have plugs right into the plugs installed on the block but, I was told my computer would not read them. I learned that if the tuner is aware you are using the late model sensors, he can make them work no problem but, the tech from Injection Connection said to just tune them completely out. After doing about 40 of these swaps, he says that they are too sensitive, and cause more trouble then they are worth. He said if you drive with a lap top turned on to that issue, you can see where every bounce, or driveline bump, the sensors kick in. Most people would not know this, as they don't drive around with lap tops.
