I called my dealer today to get a price for the 3:42 gear for my 02 Vette which has the 3:15, and he told me that there is nothing showing in his parts book. I asked him to check for the Z06 which I believe has the 3:42 and he told me that the replacement part for the Vetts with the 3:42 is the 3:15 . I told him that there is a GM-3:42 gear and he said get the part no.
Does anybody know the GM part no. Thanks
I'm sorry I don't have the part number, but I bet one of the forum supporting dealers would, and they'd probably give you a better price on it than the dealer that employs the parts guy who's either too ignorant or lazy to get you a part number for something that ships in every manual equipped Vette.

They are a forum vendor, and will get you the right number, and a great price.
By the way this is breakdown of C5's:
All Automatics come equipped with 2.73:1 gears
They can come with an optional 3.15:1 gear
All 6speeds come with 3.42 with no option available.
All Z06's come with 3.42 like the other 6 speed C5's, but come with shot peened ring and pinion gears for added strength.
By the way, you can pick up a good used 3.42 set of gears for around 500 bucks, from those that have upgraded to 3.73, 4.10's etc.
The part # for the 3.42 is 12551769, it is the same one as for the M6. The dealers book will not show a 3.42 for the A4, because GM does not manufacture it that way. If memory serves, the dealer wants (retail) $1200 and can not reprogram the PCM for the new required shift points.
