I just received a Wix 51042XP oil filter for my 04 C-5. I was surprised at the physical size of the filter. It’s about the same size as my riding lawn mower filter. I was familiar with the larger SB Chevy filters. Any ideas why Chevy downsized their filters. My thinking is smaller size means less filtering media.

Reason: add info
Even the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2 engines use a very small short filter.
So apparently the engineers didn't see a need for such a large sized filter.
Stick with the Wix filters.. They are WAY Better than most..
To reinforce the previous post, I think it is the K&N filter that has a nut type of projection on the bottom of the filter. My car is lowered and when I tried that filter, at oil change time the nut was scraped and dented. Fortunately no further damage, could have been disastrous.
it's also the same filter as the full-size trucks, but it works just fine. been using the Wix 51042 in both my vehicles forever (12yrs for truck & 8 for car) with no problems.
