This is the procedure I follow does it sound correct?
1. Find FARTHEST parts store that carries Mobil1 and oil filter.
2. Drive vette to parts store to get one case Mobil1, oil filter, and one extra qt. Mobil1.
3. Lift vehicle.
4. Pull drain plug.
5. Pull old filter.
6. Put on new filter.
7. Put in drain plug.
8. Add 6qts. Mobile 1.
9. Test ride 1 mile.
10. Add one more qt. Mobil1 to bring up to full.
11. Pretend to have forgotten an extra qt. Mobil1 to keep around.
12. Drive vette back to FARTHEST parts store that carries Mobil1 oil and get extra qt.
Funny how 6.5 quarts registers as full on pre '01 models and only halfway between ADD and MAX on the dipstick on '01 and above models. Probably has to do with the fact that GM redesigned the dipstick and dipstick tube and changed the location. No change to the oil pan. So why are we adding the extra half quart? Doesn't make sense. I do know that Dave Hill and his engineers came out last year and said that 7.0 qts for a refill (with filter change) is considered an "over-fill." I'll stick with the 6.5 qts.
It's just a funny  , because I said to find the FARTHEST store away (gives me more drive time in the vette).
But seriously, after six quarts it still reads a quart low. I need to use 7qts. (maybe a couple ounces less) for it to get to the full line. That's how the one mile test ride (#9) came to be in the procedures. I thought maybe the oil needed to be hot to make 6qts. be only 1/2qt. low. But, after a full run up on the temp guage with 6qts. it still reads a quart low?
Except that you add the correct amount of oil based on the specifications (6.5) and that's what it takes. There's no debate about it ;-)
I think this keeps coming up time and time again but the answer is you add 6.5 and when you've added your 6.5 you're done and you walk away and have a bevvie (unless you're driving).
Funny; I usually forget something...... Seriously, I would add one step; it is a small but useful step. I always add oil (as much as it will take) to the filter, BEFORE installing it on the engine. This helps quick oiling and prevents any "dry" spots in the system at start up. Then, you can take that ride back to the store to buy some Marvel Mystery Oil! :yesnod: :)
