But aluminum or iron for the block? How pricey are 6.0 iron blocks? Doesn't the 5.7 rotating assembly -- already in hand -- drop right into a 6.0 block? Your already talking new forged pistons. Weight difference is 90 lbs. or so, no? Might be a budget friendly pack of ponies. Though it will not, of course, look nearly as cool with painted iron instead of unpainted aluminum...

Okay, I will update after a discussion with the shop tomorrow. Being as I am retired, I have no intention of building a monster motor. Reliability and durability are a priority for me. A few extra ponies would be great but the car ran pretty good as is. Pretty much a mid 11 sec car at 120 mph on Mickey Thompson drag radials. Low elevens would be nice.

Well we talked about a new short block with forged rods and pistols. All the other stuff would be reused since I already have heads/cam, FAST intake, Nick Williams throttle body, C5R timing chain and gears and other crap. He is putting together some numbers. Will update in a few days.

Ok, had discussion with the shop owner. Talked about going thru the engine and using LS3 connecting rods and forged pistons. We are talking around 6k using all the rest of the stuff on the engine. Will take this thread to its logical conclusion. Engine had around 430 rwhp so these components should prove durable.

I'm curious as to what you are referring to with 4 corner steam kit?

Ok, the piston is cracked but they are able to hone cylinder bore to accommodate larger pistons. So the engine isninnthe machining process. We have ls3 rods, forged pistons ready to install. Reusing the PRC ported 5.3l heads after clean up and inspection. The short block shouldnbe together next week.

Does that still end up in the $6K range, or down to levels mere mortals can handle?

You are missing something. It's that it's sometimes nice to get other opinions or ideas that you might not think of. Gather other people's experiences. It's definitely a good idea to listen to your builder as they typically have the most experience, but nothing wrong with second opinions.

I think you should read my original post again...............second opinions from people who have no mechanical experience or aptitude, just opinions. Unless folks really know me, I fall into this group.as well.
Yes, once in a blue moon, someone ,will have a good idea . Mostly just b.s...If someone has to ask on a open forum a mechanical problem he is having ( and just not a kid fooling around) and he has
expert advice, readily available. You have to wonder if he has a problem. If the Op does not have confidence in the shop than he should go to another.Unfortunately, these days folks can't (or won't) work on their on own cars
So, you better accept the fact that there are many like yourself. I say to you and to the OP............
Good luck.

Default Purpose

The purpose of this thread is to provide information to others who experience this condition and to bring the issue to its conclusion. Of course I like to see other experiences and opinions. At any rate, Geoff at Next level tells me the car could be ready late next week. He says the rev limiter will be set @ 3500 rpm for 1st 500 miles of break in. Then an oil change and another 500 miles of break in and then an oil change. Then dyno tuning. That is where I am at. The short block was rebuilt using existing block and crank, ls3 rods and forged pistons. The PRC 5.3 stage 2 heads were cleaned up and reused, lifters replaced. Should be like a new built ls1 only more durablem. I will continue to report as I get new info.

That certainly reads like a very sound plan. Really looking forward to the dyno results. Picked a break-in oil yet?

So, the engine should be ready to start next week. As you can see, everything looks brand new on the engine which is a nice side affect. Should be a very stout engine once it is broken in. It has forged pistons and ls3 rods. Will update once it is started. Have to drive 1000 miles before the car iz run wixe open onnthe dyno.
