Depends on how big of a cam you go.
Most of the smaller cams (222 and below) you usually don't need to. Especially on an M6 car. But the bigger cams will need it, especially on an A4 car. :)

It really depends on how aggressive the cam is.. :rolleyes: You can get away without programming if the idle quality is tame enough..You can probably get away with a 208/212/ 225-114 Compcam without programming ..otherwise PCM programming may be necessary. Most aftermarket cams look for an idle of 800 rpms+..For instance my 226/226/554-114 Lunati requires a 900 rpm idle and we drilled the throttlebody 1/32 hole to keep the car from stalling and surging.. :chevy Your vendor / tuner will know for sure..:D
