Yes - it is common. There are a lot of threads on it. In many cases there are contaminants building up on the sending unit. I have the problem if I use the Shell station by my house regularly. For me the fix was using a couple of bottles of Techron concentrated additive and using another fuel. I use BP mostly and add the non-concentrated Techron every other tank or three and have not had problems n over a year.
Mine has been doing that off and on for a couple of years. I’ve tried different approaches with Techron and it doesn’t seem to do anything for me but I have read too many posts saying it works to Not keep trying. It hasn’t failed completely so I will just live with it.....
You betcha. I think the fuel gauge issue and the "column lock" issue are the most discussed and repeated. You will find your answers in the Tech section. But, yes, buy a bottle of Techron and add it to your tank before filling up. Your gauge will start working properly after a while.
Kim, one thing that helped for me was adding the concentrate before I left on a trip and completely filling the tank. I believe it gave it more time to work on the sending unit. Another thing that was obvious as the problem was resolving was that I could fill the tank and in about 5-10 miles it started working. If i did a little swerve to slosh the gas the gauge would also respond at times. This told me that I wanted to give the Techron time to work with as much fuel in the tank as possible as my problem was only when the tank was full.
Perhaps I have a shady shell station by my house as two other guys here swear by it, but I had the problem come back staying with that station. It took a while to get it resolved, but once I switched fuel and add Techron regularly, I literally NEVER have the issue.
I buy 6 packs of the regular strength Techron at Costco for like $15 (crazy low)
Techron is magic. Solved my problem with one application after driving only two miles. Now I add some every six months.
I used Techron every tank for six months without results. Gave up on it. A few months later I filled it up with Shell V-power Premium and my gas gauge started working.
I also dealt with the fuel gauge problem. The Techron did the trick. I too got it from Costco. I use nothing but Costco 93 octane. They use an additive that they add at the tank.i have not had a problem in years.
I buy Techron when it's on sale at Auto Zone. This stuff is the greatest. I use it all summer, every other tank full and in the fall when I put the vette up in storage.

How can you say you gave up on the Techron then went to a fuel with the techron in it. So it must have been the Techron that cured the problem

I gave up on adding Techron and tried Shell gas. It fixed my problem. Not sure if it was the PEA in it or the other additives or a combination of ingredients.. I know for a fact Techron works for a lot of people. It alone did not work for me. I was just giving others an option to try if Techron does not work. Why do you have a problem with that?
I had the same problem when my Z was new and the dealer replaced the gauge sender under warranty. I only use Shell V-Power 93 and have never had and issue since but I do the Techron thing every other fill up. The service to replace the sender is an eleven (11) hour job so it's hard to justify if a fuel additive will fix the problem.
