Heat from headers vs starter life length
I’ve maintained contact with members I do business with that tell me this is not a typical problem. Whom have never had this issue through daily drivers or strip builds. Being that there’s about enough room for an onion skin to change out the starter by pulling it through the header and the block. I’d rather not do this job again if a metal heat shield could ensure that.
Rather not not use any header wrapping that could potentially create another issue like fire. That’s Also way more work and labor.
Is my best bet a remanufactured starter?
High performance if any starter?
Or a starter specific for a built application?
Starter has, if it is from the factory 50k miles on it. Headers been on roughly 3 months. Without incident before header install. I was able to get the starter to turn a few times to get the motor running, with a long piece of brass I cut from my shop and a few hits with a hammer. With no luck after a handful of times. After a closer look it seemed the wires were not on the solenoid as tight as they should have been. Which leaves more to debate and consider.
With that discovery it always clicked when attempting to start, just wouldn’t turn the flywheel.
So, would a sub par connected wire providing power, be able to fully activate the starter ? And would the impact to motivate it indicate a near failing starter?
Also, few in between starts required no persuasion.
All experiences, advice and ball breaking appreciated 🤦
After 3 months and nearly 5k later of getting parts together. I need an under drive pulley and LS2 timing chain and she’s off to surgery for a new attitude. I Wanna iron out any and all short comings that’s gonna take me away from the long awaited HP therapy. Been long enough since I washed my day off between 1st and 3rd gear.

I would replace the starter with a good OEM and keep your battery healthy and charged. Just my experience.
Good luck.
If it's acting up then get a new Bosch truck starter with the 2 long bolts from Rock Auto and replace it. Make sure it's properly put together with clean connections and you'll be good to go.
