Manual Reverse Problems

When the car is running it will not go into reverse. If I turn the car off and move the shifter to the reverse position and turn the ignition to the on position, not started, the shifter slides into reverse and I can use reverse just fine. Once I take it out of reverse I have to follow the same procedure to use reverse again. Any thoughts on what is causing this?

Reverse lock out solenoid and connections, check plug first.

Curt, no codes or other issues from removing the plunger? Basically, I take it this solenoid is there solely to prevent one from hitting reverse instead of 5th? Thanks!

Jack up rear of car to get wheels off the ground. With trans in reverse start up engine leaving the clutch depressed. Observe if the rear tires are turning. Shift to 1st gear(clutch depressed) and observe if the tires are turning.
