Default Need Imodium...leaky butt symptoms

Hi Folks,

I thought I’d make it more lighthearted with the title lol. I found out I have a seemingly small leak from the rear. I’ve read somewhere that leaky butt it’s typical. Where should I start looking for the leak? Not sure how many seals I’m dealing with in the rear end with the trans and diff and how involved this might be but I’m going to have to address this soon. Problem is I don’t know how long it’s been leaking (because I park at an apartment complex with unassigned parking) so anyway I’m afraid to run dry. Car will be due soon for fluids change anyway in the trans and diff since I’m at 93k miles. Some guidance on next steps would be helpful.

Put in new trans and diff fluid, and clean everything. (Or, rather, pay a shop to do it for you.) Then check again a week later. This should help identify where the leaks are. When you've got 93k miles worth of dirt, dust, fluid, and other crap on the housing, it's damn near impossible to figure out where the leak is coming from without prior experience/knowledge.

Agree. Need to do that ASAP. Does anyone know if trans and diff each comes equipped with any ‘low oil level’ sensors, as the engine does?

No low sensors. Pull the plug on the differential and check level with finger. That way you at least know where you are with it. If it is a very small leak, not sure I would mess with it too much.

Yep, same thoughts. Looks to be a small leak. Couple drops when left sitting can be seen accumulate on floor. I'll check level when I replace fluids.

You might try wiggling the vent cap on the diff. If it is stuck it can cause pressure in the diff which can make it leak.

Take a floor jack and an aerosol can of engine degreaser with you to the coin car wash. Jack the rear up, spray her nasty *** with degreaser and then blast it with pressure. You won’t hurt anything. Now you’ve cleared some of the funk and that can help pinpoint which crevice she’s dripping from.
