I am having issues with my key fobs on my 2000. I read several posts on the issue which indicate the fobs are the problem, but my troubleshooting leads me to believe the receiver is the issue.
the behavior is as follows:
I re-trained both fobs, and afterwards neither worked immediatly, but if I synchronize one of the fobs (either one), both will work for a short while. The batteries are new, and while they work there is no problem with opening or locking doors from 50ft.
They will quit working after a couple of minutes, but if I resync them they will once again work. with similar behavior.
Since both fobs work when synchronized, one for a slightly longer period then the other, it indicates that the 5sec interval in the timing between fobs and receiver is slipping beyond the 5sec window, and the fact that when re-synced, both fobs work it would seem the receiver is at fault.
Does this diagnosis seem correct, or should I still suspect the fobs?
I did look into changing over to the 01-04 receivers, but they seem to be pretty expensive now.
Doubtful it is the receiver. I suspect you have broken solder joints in your fobs. This is a known well documented issue with the early fobs. I had the same issue with my 1999 fob.
If you know how to solder it is an easy fix as all you need to do is reflow the solder to get the fob(s) to work. Below is a pic of what I found in my fob.
BTW, switching to a 2001-2004 set up involves replacing all of the TPMS sensors in the tires as well. Not an inexpensive alternative at all.
Do a search for "key fob fix" to get more info.
OK thanks. I did touch up all of the solder joints a couple of years ago and it did fix the issues I was having then. I will give it a try again. Perhaps those solder joints have opened up again..
you were correct; it was the fobs. on one the component was actually lifted off of the board and broke the trace to the IC. I soldered a small wire to repair it and it is now working. The second one looked OK but I touched the 6 connections mentioned and it is no longer responding. I only need 1 so I'm good, but I will try re-training it to see if that will bring it back.
Thanks again,
