Just over 60K miles on car built 8/97. Planning to replace the AC compressor which will have me removing the water pump (yes I know there are ways to do it otherwise). Do i spend an extra $100 on a new pump? I have no reason other than age that I would expect the existing pump to need replacing.
No reason to change to a different brand of pump. GM pumps are good pumps. Just changed mine a few weeks ago.
My car was a GM lease car before I bought it. I found it interesting that GM changed the pump at 60,000 miles as one of the standard service items.
Definitely a good time to change it while you're in there IMHO.
Be careful when torqueing the water pump bolts. Those strip pretty easy.

The worst part of that job will be removing the 1997 paper gaskets for the water pump. Be careful not to chew up the block and covert it to the O-ring gaskets when you go back together.
Mine had 30k on it and I decided to put it back on as it has no leaks. I'm a cheap bastard though and it's easy job on the LS. I would change yours though.
