Default Steam lines removal

I have heard it mentioned here to remove the steam lines from the heads when the intake is off .
Over in the LS 1 site they say that is a bad move

who is correct

If you are talking about the coolant lines that run thru the T-Body then YES do it--- this is always a great simple mod------Running 200* water thru the t-body is best only used in areas with freezing conditions to prevent fuel icing----In normal aplications this 200* water heats up the t body and can alter the metabolic or moleculer level of the fuel making it less dense----and also increases the incomimg air temps--- that in turn removes timing---I have seen no side affects even in snow altitudes as long as you let the engine warm up with common sense in cold weather

don't remove them and eliminate, use a steam line kit and redirect them, eliminates air pockets !!! https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tfs-306sb601k

BAD IDEA! You have to have a way to remove trapped air in the heads. The 2001-2004 only have ONE steam cross over on the FRONT of the heads. The 97-2000 LS engines have a combined cross over pipe that vents steam from the front and rear of the heads.

When I did my heads Cam Fast90 install on my 02 ZO6, I added A REAR CROSSOVER TUBE ON THE BACK OF THE HEADS. to help eliminate air/steam pockets and improve cooling on cyls 7&8.

IF, you have a early LS engine, you can change it to the 01-04 steam pipe system and get rid of the piping manifold under the manifold. I would just massage that manifold down a little bit and keep it.

Bill PM me an e-mail address and I can send some pictures.

Ok I was talking about the coolant line that crosses over thru the T Body to heat up the T Body in cold weather--
The steam pipe is something else Sorry for the confusion--- The steam pipe is used to eliminate air bubbles and should be left as STOCK

I 'think' the OP was talking about the actual steam crossover lines under the manifold.

YES, Remove the Throttle Body coolant lines to eliminate hot coolant circulating around the TB.. It will not hurt anything but it WILL NOT add any appreciable HP.

On my 2001 I added rear "steam" lines (coolant air bleed lines) to better allow air (or steam) out of the rear of the heads. The 2001 and later C5's eliminated the rear coolant air bleed lines, perhaps because the new 2001 and later LS6 intake manifold did not have room for the rear coolant air bleed line to pass underneath it.

Bad move, GM.

LOL!! You and I both added the rear line. Cyl 7 & 8 need all the cooling that they can get. Cant let steam build up in the rear part of the head and reduce coolant flow.

Bill, Your post some time ago was the reason I installed rear steam lines. I couldn't make the front crossover fit in the rear without cutting it, bumping the ends and using hose and a tee-

That's WEIRD.. Mine fit fine. I did flip it backwards so the hose nipple points to the fire wall.. I also used a rubber hose to a T

flipped it and pointed it toward the firewall. It fit fine with a FAST 92. Some have used truck crossovers on the rear. I plan on running HPDEs with mine, if it were a street car I'd likely leave the stock rear block offs and the front crossover.

Very cool video! Didn't realize that the truck cross over was designed that way.. Another good option for the conversion.

I sent him pictures of the 97-2000 crossover set up.

You can massage that cross over manifold to sit lower and not contact the bottom of the LS6/2001+ intake manifold So there is no need to convert the early style to something else.

GM has produced countless LS motors with the rear steam ports blocked off and just the front crossover without a problem in daily use. Plenty of C5Zs get tracked with the factory block off caps in the rear and the factory front cross over without a problem.

many others had #7 cyl issues also !!!!! for so little time and effort mod it !!!!! ( no need to EVER have to purge the coolant system to fill !!!)

#7 is generally only a problem with power adders. LS6 on track failure rate is quite low.

Sometimes you have to purge it other times you don't with the rear or not.
