Default C5 HUD question

My 2000 C5 HUD display got progressively dimmer over a course of a few months, then went totally blank, The mirror moves as it should but the display does not illuminate and the dimmer switch does nothing. I tried to do the repair to bypass the photoresistor in the unit by soldering together the 2 terminals on the opposite side of the board from it, but there is still no illumination from the display. Are these things known to fail? It must be very infrequent if they do, because nobody on the forum reports that. Is there any repair or replacement for the display itself, or do I have to obtain a whole new HUD unit? Is there a way to determine if the fault lies with the dimmer switch to the HUD?
Thanks.

Dealership question, not something we're going to send to the chief engineer. Sorry.

I believe the photoresistor or light sensor is not for the HUD since it has a separate dimmer control. In case you need to replace the HUD unit, I have one sitting on a shelf. Have done the pivot pin repair, replaced plastic with metal. PM me if you need it.

This thread was originally posted in another section so it was moved here.

However, it would be better in the C5 Tech section so off it goes.

There is a photoresistor in the HUD unit changing the brightness of the display depending on ambient light, and that is totally separate from the HUD dimmer control and from the dash dimmer control. It automatically gets brighter during the day and dimmer at night.
If you look at the HUD from the forward end end or through the windshield you can see a small hole in the top rear facing forward and that is where the light sensor sits. If you have opened it up to do any repair you will see the wires connecting the top half (with the sensor) to the lower half (with the circuit board and mirror assemblies).

I have tested mine with an ohm meter and think it is working, and from my little bit of research, these things very rarely, if at all, ever fail. My progressively slowly dimming display and then it finally going out may be a failure of the display itself, and that is also extremely rare.

I would like to find another display and switch mine out but that may not be so easy to locate or to wire up. Meanwhile my car sits with a naked interior awaiting the next step.

mdlmd, can I get an update on this? I know it is a year old, but I think I have a similar issue. I had the fallen mirror issue, so I removed the HUD projector and fixed the mirror, then reinstalled the HUD with no issues. It worked fine for about a month, then last weekend I got in the car and could smell a 'burnt electrical odor". I noticed that the HUD projector display was not working, but the mirror repair was still okay. I removed the dash pad, and the burnt electrical odor was stronger. When I removed the HUD and opened it up, the odor was definitely coming for the HUD circuit board, either the big board, or the electronics behind the cooling fins. I have no idea why something fried in the HUD. I have ordered a replacement, but am concerned that when I put it in the same thing might happen.

Thanks-
