I had the headlights in the up position when reconnecting the battery. Turned the key - twisted the headlight switch on - they went down. Switch off - nothing - switch on - nothing. Tips on the "bracket to motor alignment" would be handy....
Turn the manual crank **** on the headlight till it is off the end stops, now turn the lights on and they should go up.
And the ‘knee’ in the link is pointed forward? I had it like this - with the other end midway between the stops - and it went down and that was it. I should crank it hard up against one of the stops then try? Won’t have a chance to look at this again until tomorrow.
The other thing to look at are the headlight bump stops, The mechanism digs into the plastic stops over time and then it becomes slightly stuck when it hits the stop. If you move the headlight off the stops you should be able to pull them off and just turn them around 180 degrees. That gives it a new side to stop against. Good for another 10 yrs or so.

Now this is where I left off yesterday - the lever end midway between the bump stops and the ‘knee’ pointed forward - from here they closed but would not open....
Your knee might be pointed the wrong way, not entirely sure though.
Do your headlights turn on when you turn the switch on?
I looked at other links/vids and the knee is pointed the right way - if its pointed the other way it doesn't travel far enough to fully open/close the doors.
The headlights do not turn on. How I got into this predicament was upgrading (replacing) the entire headlight capsule with a Radio Flyer unit with HID on the low beam and LED on the high beam.
I did not mark the position of anything when taking it apart (only now am I reading that this was supposed to be done).
If I can't get this figured out I'm going to have to take it to the dealer and pray that they can figure it out....
Plug in your halogen bulbs and make sure they turn on. If they do not, you probably blew a fuse somewhere. The headlight power is the same as the headlight open signal.

So I had some wiring issues (reversed polarities). Now I have all 4 lights coming on (yay!) - but the motors won’t reverse to open them. Can someone who has operational headlights confirm that the motor does indeed change direction to flip them up?

#54 is in the passenger footwell. Since your headlights are working, it's not that fuse.
Yes, the HCM (headlight control module) reverses polarity to the motors to reverse them. Check your HCM connections and make sure they are tight. If you can, check to make sure you have 12 volts at the white wire with the headlights on.
