Help needed, unsure about polylocks on roller rockers.
Hello, thanks for giving me a minute and helping out hopefully.
Recently got my first LS1 car (woohoo), and trying to sort some things out about this car. I had the oil cap off earlier, and I am curious if the polylock on this roller rocker looks wrong?
I'm used to old school SBC stuff and seeing the set screw poking out of the top just a bit. So seeing this one so recessed has me a bit worried about impending failure, but I'm also showing my LS newbness hard. I figured before I took the valve cover totally off I would post up and see what the community thought.
Not sure about the brand of rocker, and I'm sure that would help sort out the info... They are rollers, on Trick Flow heads, but that's the limit of my knowledge so far.
That is unusual, polylocks are not generally used on ls1s simply because you're not adjusting lash, they normally have a bolt that's touqued to spec. Not saying you can't use a polylock, but why
Here's a wild thought.....the rockers were installed incorrectly, with the radiused side of the trunnion facing up, and the flat side down. This would cause the poly lock to ride much higher on the stud, therefore decreasing the thread engagement of the set screw. And if by some crazy chance my guess is correct, IT AIN'T RIGHT!
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate the input and will be investigating further.
Looking a little harder, I can see a 1.7 3.8 at the top of the pushrod side of the rocker. The perhaps look like Elgin SS rockers, but that's a guess at best through the oil fill.
If time allows tomorrow night I'll pull the passenger side cover and get some more detail.
Looks like you have the Comp Cams 1.8:1 Ultra Pro Magnum Rocker Arm Set. I don't think you have anything to worry about unless your getting excessive noise or you suspect a rocker may have come loose.
For those curious, I have noticed what I believe to be some valvetrain noise, but this car also has an aluminum intake manifold which has to amplify what I hear and headers. Combine that with my being my first LS engine and I'm just trying to exercise caution.
With that being said, I pulled the passenger side valve cover off to take a closer look at things. I notice that the rockers that have no valve spring preload seem to have a slight bit of side to side wiggle but nothing crazy.
On the topic of the rockers, they are magnetic, which reaffirms my thoughts of possible Elgin SS rockers. These are stamped 3/8" 1.7 on the pushrod end. So, if these are Elgins, I need to start there to learn more on the fasteners.
I wonder if you have a solid lifter cam??????? The OEM hydraulic cam uses a pedestal mounted rocker with NO adjustment. It would be beneficial to know so you can properly maintain and adjust if necessary. The hydraulic cam requires a specific lifter preload to work properly. The solid lifter cam need a specific clearance to work properly.
