Default Heat coming from center console..

Has anyone experienced this issue? I have a 99 and noticed after driving the car for a good 45 minutes at normal driving speeds (hwy and street) that there was a good deal of heat coming from the center console. You could feel it if you put your hand between the passenger and driver seats and the center console. It felt like the heat was on...

Any thoughts?

-Thanks

I remember, during the initial road test of the C5 by one of the mags, the writer commented about how he had left a chocolate bar in the console for later consumption. To his surprise, he had a chocalate treat waiting for him in the console...melted everywhere!

I noticed this when I first got my vette. But it seems to have almost gone completely away after I added on some coated longtube headers. Maybe it is my imagination, but I feel no major heat coming from the tunnel anymore. Anyone else notice this after longtubes?

If they'd mount the cup holder in the right place it would make a great hot chocolate warmer :) Don't put anything heat-sensitive in the console.

Look at it this way, now you dont have to microwave those frozen burritos from 7/11 anymore. Just pop them into the console and by the time you arrive at your destination... you have a hot lunch waiting for you! Now how many car makers can say that?? :smash:

I have LongTubes too, but still gets really hot.

Wonder if those KoolMat blankets do the trick. They are WAAAAy overpriced though

It's nice in the winter when the top is down. :D

I had to insulate my rear center compartment too, for our lunchboxes, as that area gets the tranny and over-axle pipe heat.

I have LT's and still have the heat from console. When I had the driveline out I saw that the whole car is just pretty tight in that area, exhaust is tucked right up in the cavity. Next time exhaust is out I'm going to wrap the pipes with that tape stuff and see if it helps, I'll let you know.

Heat is normal and by the way the transmission is not under the tunnel, it is located by the front of rear end. Ever check your tranny fluid? Think this is hot ride in C3, C2 without insulation.......... :chevy

Speaking of insulation - search for Evil-Twin and his interior insulation. I did this mod and my center console is now the same temp as the floor boards or any other part of the interior. It is also quieter besides. Took about $60 worth of material but did take about 15 hours for the whole thing.

The heat is coming from the Catalytic Converters. They get mucho hot...

Remove them and it is a night and day difference... ;)

Pewter Power,
I removed the seats and center console and wrapped the area with a product called "Reflectiv". Works pretty well overall but there is still a very warm area next to the shifter. Pleased with the time and effort it took to do the install. Reflectiv is available at Lowe's.

later,
