Default Code P0342

I have an 04 Z06 with an GMPP LS376/525 engine. I am using the Lingenfelter 24 to 58 tooth adapter. Car ran good after the installation and tune. That was at least 3 years ago. Recently the car has been hard to start, particularly when warm. That has gotten progressively worse and is now hard to start warm or cold, along with a backfire or two. It is also throwing a P0342 code (low cam position signal). I replaced the Cam Position Signal sensor and inspected the pins carefully. Everything looked OK. Same problem. Is it possible for the Lingenfelter box to fail like that? Or does the adapter box either work or doesn't work? I'm not sure where else to look. I do not have access to to tech 2 (maybe I should buy one)!

The P0342 is a CMP "low voltage"...first thing I'd ask is if you replaced the sensor with an OEM or aftermarket ??...a while back we had a member who had a bad crank sensor and he replaced it with an aftermarket....still would not start...replaced it with an OEM and it started right up !!...DON'T install aftermarket !!...any sensor in these cars whether a CMP,CKP, MAF, Fuel Pressure etc should always be installed with an OEM...you may get a good one but a lot of times no !!....now you don't need the CMP sensor to start the car but will will give you a "hard start" if going bad...you also should check the integrity of the wiring...a visual is not good enough !!...all you would need is a voltmeter to check... if that's no good 100 new sensors will not fix it...circuit is a simple 3 wire Hall Effect sensor...ignition feed, signal, and Low Reference (ground)....I believe your cam sensor is a 4X !!...is it ??...I don't know the internals of the adapter but hopefully the computer is sending out the right info !! ...a Tech 2 would be helpful in diagnosing but not required... you'll see a Cam Signal Input PID and a High/Low transition counter...the counter should be increasing...I think I have the name of those Data Pids correct...enclosed is a pic of my 1X CMP sensor waveform with my scope !!...if it's not close to ground or near 12 volts you'll have issues !!...hope this helps !!

Well I did use an aftermarket sensor because that's all I could get on short notice. Leaving in the AM for a Corvette event. When I get home, I'll replace it with a delco unit. I'd sure like to know if that is the problem before I replace it though. I'll do some studying - surely I can measure voltage with my meter.

any sensor in these cars whether a CMP,CKP, MAF, Fuel Pressure etc should always be installed with an OEM
I can't overstate this enough. Sensors should be either ordered through a GM parts dealer or cross-references to an identical OE part (usually ACDelco). Some OEM sensors are kinda expensive but it's way cheaper to (eg) spend $150 on a MAF than $50 on a MAF, then $50 on a MAF, then $150 on a MAF.

Since the convenient location of you CMP sensor you'll just need a volt meter, 2 back probes or T-pins, the new sensor, and a piece of steel or anything ferrous...any wrench will do !!!...it can be tested that way !!

Thanks for all the help. Replacing the sensor with an OEM will be first on my list. I'll have to put this on hold for a couple weeks. I leave in the morning for Denver for a week plus of NCCC Corvette Convention. Then home for a day and hop on an airplane for LA - Invited to the C8 unveiling, so can't miss that.

Antyime replacing parts that have to do cam timing or ignition timing you MUST preform a
"crank angle sensor relearn procedure" Anyone with HP----- EFILIVE or a TECH II or similar device can do this for you----Try this 1st before panicing------
