Default Speed sensors - in differential

So my code breaker guy says the vehicle speed sensor in the differential is not giving consistent readings; I should replace it, as it's a part of the ABS. However, before I could buy one, another guy mentioned that the ring the sensor reads can go bad also. Anyone else have any experience with this sensor or ring? Your help is appreciated............................. .........Dan

No experience with a failure, but the speed sensor is a easy replacement. The ring not

The ABS uses the Wheel Speed Sensors on each wheel hub for ABS/AH computation. The DIFF sensor is for the Speedo. Is the speedo working properly?

I would check the wiring harness /connector before I replaced the sensor. Pull it out and make sure that it is not dirty (covered in metal filings)

The reluctor inside the diff is bullet proof. No worries there.
If the sensor wiring and connector are checked sat, replace the sensor.

I understood the differential mounted sensor to contribute to the ABS also. But, yes, the speedo seems to work fine. He cleared the code (C1743) and we drove around for a mile or two, then checked again to find that it had reset and was coding again. I agree that the ring has to be pretty bullet proof. Another had suggested checking the connections prior to replacing the sensor, and that's on the calendar for about 2 weeks from now. Thanks for your thoughts!

It does but not directly. The signal gets to the EBTCM from serial data line If the speedo is working, its getting to the PCM and BCM
