Default Bad knocking/pinging under full load

I’m hearing pretty loud pinging (I can hear it over the exhaust roar as it’s pretty loud) under full throttle and 4,000+ rpms. It is worst over 5,000 rpms full open. I’d like help and guidance to resolve this issue.

I bought my first 2001 base C5 three months ago with 28,000 miles. Its now got 34,000 on it. It’s got SLP headers, pipes and short mufflers and I was told by the seller (the mechanic of the owner who died and who is trustworthy) that the heads were ported and polished, but nothing more. (He didn’t do the work.) Has a Hurst shifter. I run only Chevron premium. It runs at 190 degrees consistently. I do notice a slight occasional misfire when idling, kinda like my 72 Ford E350 460 gas.

On last month on a road trip it had the following codes:

P0153 C

P0430 H

U 1000 H

U 1064 H

I cleared them and it’s been running fine, other than the pinging under full load and over 4K rpms.

Occasionally I get the U 1000 H and U 1064 H codes, always after a bit of idling. Like every few hundred miles.

I ran half a tank premium and half a tank of 102 octane at-gas on my trip that seemed to help but didn’t eliminate it, and I didn’t want to push my luck on a long road trip so I didn’t run it over 4,000 rpms.

Where do you guys suggest I begin?

FYI: I named my vette “Fluffy” cuz theirs nothing fluffy about my beast!

You and Fluffy need to get your act together. LOL

PO153 is slow response bank 2 sensor # 1
PO430 catalyst system low efficiency bank 2
U1000 loss of communications
U1064 loss of communications with BCM

The last three are history. PO153 is current and most likely your problem.

Some will scream "SNAKE OIL" but I'd suggest a good top cleaning with SeaFoam, fill up the tank with premium, add a can of SeaFoam and run it normal.

This should do the trick

I did a bit of research, and the O2 sensor or wiring could be bad.

What about tuning on a dyno?

I would start by not running it where it pings, that's for sure.

Try the Seafaom mentioned above and see if that improves anything, but if it doesn't I would get some new primary 02 sensors and see if 02 code goes away. I personally like to use Denso 02 sensors on GM vehicles and have found Rock Auto to have the best price. Do you know if the previous owner had a tune done especially since you have headers?

Unfortunately I couldn’t get any info. Previous owner died and his son who inherited his dads baby couldn’t talk about it.

YES fill with gas and add a can of Seafoam to it
You need to do a "fast clean " 1st ---- again with seafoam prior to adding it to the tank----The instuctions are on the can
Best is to dis connect the brake line booster hose and pour the Seafoam into the engine SLOWLY You need to pinch that hose with some vice grip pliers so the opening is smaller ontherwise the engine will die The car will smoke white smoke badly so do it outside That white smoke is the carbon being cleaned out of the combustion chambers and intake
Run the engine until it stops smoking 10-20 minutes
Finally if that does not stop the pinging I am almost sure that your engine has been tuned before and it just has too much timing above 4000 RPM's at WOT Then you would need a simple retune------A dyno tune is not needed as that is normally best suited for a race only applications --- As they only check fuel and spark at WOT in 3rd gear--They don't drive the car nor address any P/T driving thru all the gears at idle-- cruising --- city--- WOT
