Need to replace/repair trans because of synchronizers. Suggestions?
Replace clutch too? 144,000 miles
Any mods? either way definitely replace the clutch if the tranny comes out. As for transmission, depends on the mods and budget if I would get it built or not
If you remove the transmission, there are a VERY WIDE RANGE of highly recommended things that should be changed and or replaced:
Torque Tube Internals: At a MIMIMUM, replace the rubber couplers!!! That many miles, I would replace the TT Bearings.
CLUTCH! Yes!! Also include, the pressure plate, Pilot bearing, throwout bearing, Slave Cylinder, add a remote bleeder and replace the master cylinder.
Differential. At a minimum, replace the output shaft seals. I strongly recommend replacing the limited slip clutches and the belleview springs that apply the lock up friction on the clutches. There is a C6 ZO6 parts list that will directly fit into the C5 differential and makes it stronger: They are the left and right output shafts, limited slip clutches, belleview springs. Its a relative easy up-grade and does not disturb the ring and pinion set up.
As Bill said, there are a lot of "while you're there" things that you could do, but IMO a lot of it depends on if you're doing the work yourself or not.
There are several companies that are known for doing reliable t56 rebuilds anywhere from stock all the way to TR6060 setups that will hold whatever you can throw at them.
I'd do a clutch for sure at that mileage. If you beat on the car at all, I'd look into an LS7 setup. Otherwise a stock clutch would be fine.
