I have a 2001 Z06 that has no tail lights or dash/instrument lights. The car is new to us and we were out driving at night for the first time when we noticed these lights were not working. The dash lights work when you first enter the car, so I know they are functioning. The brake lights work fine. I read some previous thread related to this issue. One suggestion was to check the #6 mini fuse, so I pulled it and it looks fine. I have been reading the manual and found something about the "Twilight Sentinel Automatic Lamp Control" and was wondering if this might have something to do with it. This is our first Corvette, so we are on a steep learning curve and would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
With out actually taking voltage readings, my FIRST guess would be the Steering Column Multifunction Switch. They get old and worn and this is one of the symptoms that happens.
See if you can rapidly cycle the **** a bunch of times and have someone watch the lights and see if they try to come on.
That makes sense. Last night when I was troubleshooting I was turning the switch rapidly on and off and the dash lights did turn on one time. I couldn't get it to repeat, but it did happen once. I will go back and play with that some more. The other new symptom last night was the headlights not popping up and they worked fine the night before. Would this also be connected to this issue? If this is the problem, how involved/expensive will this repair be? Thanks!
Its not too bad of a repair,, the switch is a bit expensive. You will have a lot of the column apart and the close out panel under the drivers side foot well to access the harnesses.
In the options menu enable Twilight Sentinal. This will turn the lights on when the ambient light level is low enough. This will tell you if all the circuits are working to the lights and kind of confirm that the multi-function switch is the culprit.
It is an easy but involved process to change the switch out. Many trim panels have to come out to have access to the electrical connector for the switch and remove the trim around the steering column.
Turns out I don't have the Twilight Sentinel option. Any other ways I can confirm that the multi-function switch is the problem before I tear the car apart? Thanks!
