Default Harmonic Balancer Replacement

Hi all,

getting my first c5 repair done, the harmonic balancer is wobbling a bit and the car shudders a bit when idling.

ive asked my mechanic to replace the balancer, bolt, seal, and both belts with OEM parts. As it’s a bigger job 4.5h labour), wondering if there’s anything else they should address while in there and with the steering rack off, etc.

its an 01 Coupe, 82,000km. Runs great but just wondering if like some other cars water pumps or anything should be looked at when up in and with that much taken apart.

would appreciate any advice!

I just had mine done and that's the exact parts I had replaced. Although with ATI 10% UD & ARP crank bolt.

I would not use another oem balancer or the same outcome may happen... I would also go with an arp bolt just in case you need to reuse it again later down the line... also a good time to do a cam swap if that is something you want to do

Use a Powerbond for street and fun or ATI if it's a stick getting flogged. Don't go OEM balancer again.

I’m mainly driving 2-4x a week, short trips, shows on weekends, etc. Mechanic suggested just getting the OEM one...is there really a noticeable difference between the Dayco or other aftermarket ones?

not really looking for the higher end racing ones/ HP gain, just the repair so it stops wobbling/ shuddering intermittently at idle.

the base Powerbond HB is a good replacement. The OEM is prone to separation and can go from 8000 to 108000 miles or 13000KM to 170000km while the Powerbond usually last more than 100,000 miles under normal use. Also, the ARP crank bolt is a stronger replacement than the Torque to Yield OEM bolt.

Sounds like your "mechanic" either wants repeat business from you like replacing the HB again in the near future, or he doesn't know much about C5 Corvettes. I'd try and find someone else to work on your car.

I wont use OEM balancers! Get the powerbond and ARP Bolt!
