I just got a 2002 Z06 with 14,000 miles. On the first day a whining noise, like belt slip, started coming from the engine. The Chevy dealer confirmed there is a noise and said it needs a new power steering pump and quoted $1900 to replace it.
How can a pump die in so few miles?
I've driven it 300 miles. Nothing has been fixed, but the whining noise has stopped. Now, when the car is not rolling, it is hard to turn the wheel and it makes a growling noise when I do. The steering works fine while driving.
What do I need to know?
I meant air in the power steering system, but if no leaks or work was done, then doubtful it needs to be bled.
I do know that the price they gave you sounds crazy and if it turns out to be the pump, you can do it and save a lot of money.
It turns out the pulley on the steering pump broke. There is a splined metal sleeve still on the pump shaft but the pulley, which is apparently a casting, broke off. Possibly the sleeve became loose in the pulley making the noise. Possibly the pump is OK. Has anyone else seen this happen?

$1900? Doesn't sound quite right. I got an upgraded setup from Turn One with their billet pulley, at a higher rating for road course track, which was somewhere around $450 in parts cost. Install labor was a few hours, certainly not $1400 worth of labor.
