I have a 2002 z06 that was running fine yesterday. I went on a 30 minute drive and not a single hiccup. Now the fuel pump won't prime. The car will start but dies only a second or two after it starts. I can get the car to run by holding the key in the start position just before the starter engages. Does this sound more like an ignition switch issue or a fuel pump issue?
If the pump doesn’t do it’s 2 second prime when the key is turned ON it sounds more like an ignition switch...what you can do is connect the positive lead of your volt meter to battery positive and the black lead to one of the 2 test points on the fuel pump fuse...read the “voltage drop” when you try to crank it over...you can also try it key on...if switch is good you should not see more than a .1 to .2 reading on your multimeter !!
If you don't hear the pump prime just swap out the pump relay (#35) with the horn relay and see what happens....the horn relay sits caddy corner from the fuel pump relay...not knowing your "skillset" I'm just trying to keep this low tech.
If you can make the pump run (and motor run) by juxtopositioning the key in the switch, then it ain't the relay and it ain't the pump. Key switch for the win!
I tried both switch the relay with the horn relay and checking fuses and neither worked. I got a ignition switch from ecklers today (its the closest place that had one in stock). I installed the new switch and its still doing the same thing. I checked all my connections again and let the car sit with the negative terminal off for about a half hour. Still same symptoms.
Pump had no prime
Pump will not stay running under normal operation
I can only get the car to idle if the key is positioned just right.
Could it be that the lock cylinder or key is worn out and is not engaging properly?
So it won’t prime key on but if you jiggle the ignition switch then it will start ??...with key on do you have power to the fuel pump fuse and if not how about when you jiggle the key ??
Yes it will start but it will die again immediately. The key has to be held perfectly in one spot just before the starter engages but past the "on position". That point is when the interior of the car has no lights/gauges lit up. I will check for power at the fuse, relay, and pump tomorrow when I get home from work. The fuses and relays have all been replaced just to be sure there was no issue with any of those. I also replaced the interior ignition 1 and 2 fuses.
So I got home today and checked the fuel pump relay and fuse. Both are good and have power when the key is on. I have power at the pump only when the key is in the start position, but no power to the pump when the key is in the on position or during the time the pump is suposed to prime.
