Re: What, exactly, is bad about revving under no load? (Sam Lin)
rwj383, can you elaborate on what would be damaged from extended bumping of the rev limiter?
Sam
I feel the excessive change in momentum caused by fuel on/off due to limiter can be stressful on any valvetrain components and should be avoided. If you look at the limiter parameters in Edit, you will note that it is set up to turn on and off within 1 rpm. given this, i feel that the system does keep actual RPM's close to limiter specs unless downshifting and forcing the motor into >limiter RPMS. So one can go both ways in this debacle. Bouncing off the limiter does create harmonics. are they damaging? perhaps over an extended period of timel, if not sooner. go out and bounce off the limiter and you be the judge. Especially with nitrous!! not.........
Common sense should prevail at some point. I have found the limits of the LS1 stock motor. I feel it was a combination of free-revving and extended nitrous use with the stock fuel system and going lean on a few occasions. It wasnt until i was snapping the throttle/free-revving a bit in a parking lot showing off when the top ring on # 7 pinched closed and popped the piston. no nitrous being used, just free-revving. So, i say again, go ahead and free-rev, have fun. Call me when you need a motor....i know a great engine builder!!

Were you free-revving to or near red line or were you free-revving much lower like, say, 65% of red line?
