Default Caliper bolt broke

While trying to do my first brake pad job I broke the head off of the top caliper bolt. Has this ever happened to anyone else? What can I do to get it out?

You can try an EZ out extractor and a cobalt drill bit or take it to a shop where they can tack weld a smaller diameter bolt onto it and remove it (my favorite method)...a lot of penetrating fluid and heat may help !!

If there is any of the bolt left you can also take a sharp chisel and put a notch in it and take a hammer and tap it "lefty loosie" after using some heat and penetrating fluid !!

How does that even happen? Were you taking off the bolt or putting it on? The torque spec on that is like 125 ft/lbs...

The caliper bolt torque spec is 23 lb/ft. The caliper bracket torque spec is 125 lb/ft.

That appears to be the bolt that secures the caliper BRACKET to the spindle. It's torqued to 125 ft/lbs, as previously stated....HOWEVER, it's also got a shot of "red Loctite" on it, from the factory, so it does not loosen up. You need to warm the bolt, to break down the Loctite, before removing it. And when you re-install the bolt, you need to give it a couple of drops of Loctite.

Manual recommends that the Bolts that hold on the caliper bracket need to be replaced when removed. (Probably for this reason) and they get torqued right 125.

if it’s just a caliper bolt that broke there should be new bolts in your brake pad set. (Although I still can’t figure out why they only give you 2 bolts for the pads when you need 4. Haha)

Looks like you have to drill and tap it and hope all good, or get it out as described, might get lucky, or replace spindle. No mater what you choose, it's some work. I think spindle would be quickest.

Just get a slider pin kit if its the smaller caliper bolt.

If it's the bigger bracket bolt then you have a more difficult job. With thread locker, it won't turn out easy. I'd try to weld a nut onto the end. The heat will help break it loose.

I can see some red on the bolt. It was likely re-installed with red lock-tite which is the wrong thread locking compound. There was a thread locking compound on the factory bolts but it certainly wasn't the equivalent of red lock-tite because you could remove the factory installed bolts without heat

Well, red or blue is the same except for the heat threshold.

Sure, the stuff that comes on the bolt still isn't the same as either of them.

The blue formulation is "medium strength", while the red formulation is "high strength"......as stated on the packages.
