Default Dampener replacement +

Stock car and it will remain that way.

Getting ready to do an ATI dampener and front seal replacement.

However, I saw a recommendation on the forum to also replace the timing chain (ls2 chains are the only ones for sale) and front cover gasket.

question: do front cover gaskets commonly fail and leak oil? Do timing chains commonly fail?

Trying to juggle that dangerous question of “while I’m in there?”

I see a lot of posts for dampener and seal replacements but not chain and cover gaskets. Trying to figure out if that recommendation I saw was just overly cautious etc.

No. Do the dampener and the seal and leave everything else alone. That "while you're there" frequently spirals out of control

i hear ya man. It’s a dangerous road to go down. Haha. I only ask because it was recommended by bill curlee who seems to post a lot on the forum. But if I don’t have any issues with the chain or front cover gasket, I don’t see the need to drill down that far. But I only ask because I saw these recommendations on the forum.

I wouldn't do the chain or timing cover seal on a stock cammed car. ARP bolt, Balancer (ATI or Dayco), front seal.

Change the seal...........Done! .......If you take off that cover, you have to have the tool to realign the seal to the crank.

If it isn't broken don't fix it. As stated you could be opening a bigger can of worms.

Thanks for the replies. Decided to just go with the ATI, arp, and front seal and will take a look at the steering rack while it’s out. Looks like gm still sells a boot kit for $50 if it’s needed.

interestingly, I called some shops for the install. Quotes range from $400-800. Makes you wonder.

Just had a ATI installed with the Crank Seal and new bolt and that is all my go to Mechanic said I needed. He said, "leave everything else alone!".

Got an ati in order. Now just trying to find a shop to do the install. Price differential is wild.

Where are you located?

It isn't that bad of a job but does take a few specialty tools which can likely be purchased for less than what a shop charges.
