Default C5 4.10 gears

Hi I’m looking into putting in some 4.10 gears for my 2000 c5 vette. It’s a manual with the t56 and has a cam and some headers making 400whp. I was wondering what I would need to replace when doing 4.10 gears? Can I just get away with putting in the ring and pinion or do I have to change bearings and clutches?

You’ll need to do at least the clutch packs, as far as the need to make it stronger that all depends on if it’s just a driver and/or your going to be racing it with sticky tires

I did 4.10s in my 02 about 3.5 years ago. Best thing I ever did for the car. Actually makes 6th gear worth something. Saw no degradation to my fuel economy. As far as what to replace, I went the easy route and purchased the entire thing assembled and ready to go from ZIP Racing. That is such a sensitive thing and has to be so bloody precise that it made sense for me to make sure it was set up by a professional that works on rear ends all the time. I don't mean to discourage you but if you don't have a lot of experience setting up differentials it may be worth considering. I am pretty fair with a wrench but those can be tricky.

I did the Motive gears and master install/bearing kit. You'll most likely/definitely need to replace the bellevue washers, but clutches may or may not be necessary. Obviously replace both axle seals and the trans output seal. For a basic/essential upgrade, a C6Z06 driver side output shaft would be smart (~$60 IIRC). You can do the other one as well, but it's more of a pain in the butt and not prone to breaking like the other side.

The place that did mine is very reputable and told me the clutches were fine (~45k miles on the car).

As mentioned above, this set up has to be very precise. A lot of them end up whining and not lasting as long as they should. Smartest/safest choice unless you have someone near you that is very familiar with these is to buy a built diff from a reputable vendor and swap the entire case.

Agree with all. Either buy it from a reputable aftermarket supplier or source a shop that has the experience with these, If I'm not mistaken, there are special tools required as well if you opt to go it alone, I selected the Motive 3.90 set up on my stick vert and found the most reputable performance shop here in LV to perform the gear swap.

Good luck. You won't regret this mod!
