Default Parking brake release

Just wanted to post this incase of help to others. I had noticed the thumb release button on my brake was not springing back, requiring pulling out manually with fingers before the parking brake would ratchet and engage.

My carpets and seats are out so I could see the mechanism. It looked very much like freeing and lubricating was needed due to the lack of use my car has had (laid up 8+ years). So I go to work to no avail moving and lubricating parts. It turned out that the leather that returns inside the grab handle was fouling the release button.

i post this because it wasn’t easy to tell this was the case. It could have easily been stuck metal parts. The moral would be to remove your brake grab handle before doing anything else. A single screw beneath the leather shroud lets the handle pull off.

I was able to trim the leather away inside the handle with a sharp craft knife. It appears glued well so it hopefully won’t fray.

bottom picture showing screw to release handle (you have to pull the leather gaitor right back over the grab handle to access this screw then the handle slips off).
