Default 2001 manual trans fluid

In the process of doing trans and diff fluid change. Diff was easy to track down. 88862624.

however, trans has been more difficult.

my previous invoices from 2010 and 2014: 88862155. Which from my research is still sold by gm.

called the dealer today to double check that part number and they told me they don’t use that anymore. They use: 88861800

reached out to the master of the forums, ET aka Evil twin and he recommends: 88865602

I’m going with ET. Careful of those dealers out there.

(and yes I know about AMSOIL. And no I don’t want to use it. Thanks)

I have no idea the differences. Hopefully someone smarter than me can chime in.

Your dealer is following tremec's recommendation with the syncromesh stuff.

http://www.tremec.com/faqs.php

Fortunately the T56 can run syncromesh (gm or Pennzoil) or the appropriate Dexron compatible fluid like ET recommended. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the finding what someone says is the perfect fluid. I have Pennzoil syncromesh on the shelf ready to go in when I put my drivetrain back together..... Only because it's a tremec recommendation, but honestly it shifted super smooth and it did great with Valvoline MaxLife synthetic ATF for last year.

Anyway, the syncromesh is a manual transmission specific fluid and the Dexron VI is an ATF.

Thanks for the info. Looked a little more into this and the 88862155 on my invoices is Dexron VI atf and so is et’s part number. Not sure why the different part number since they appear to be identical. Anyways, I’ll use that since it’s already what’s in the car. Like you said, probably doesn’t matter all that much anyway. It’s just odd that different shops/dealers recommend different fluids.

Thanks. Yeah. But I’m an og owner. The only thing that has been in the trans in the last 20 years is dex 3 probably from factory and then dex 6 thereafter. I’ll stick with the dex 6. I’m old school. I don’t like switching fluid brands. Never had a trans leak or any issues with it so it makes it hard to switch.

Took the car to a very knowledgeable corvette tech the other day. He confirmed these cars 2001 and up should only get dex vi which is fully synthetic. Ac delco 10-9395. (Evil twin was correct with his recommendation. I’d tag and thank him but anytime I mention him, I get banned for 30 days. Thus, no tag, but thanks evil!)

FWIW, I've had great luck with Mobil 1 and Valvoline synthetic DEX3 fluids in my c5z. The short period I tried RP I was thoroughly disgusted as when cool 1-2 shift was a no go and even when warmed up 1-2 had a little hitch it. Absolute trash fluid and I've read countless people raging about many of their fluids in several different applications.

there is absolutely zero chance there is any noticeable difference between rp, mobile or dex vi.

Recently change the transmission fluid in my 97 with Torque-Drive from Amsoil. Feels really nice.

You say that but my freshly rebuilt trans simply did not work with RP. YMMV I can't reccomend it and if you read around there is plenty of dissatisfaction with RP products to go around.

I'm running with Red Line's D4 ATF. It's been in my '01 C-5 since '02...…..

Perhaps you are correct. But you’re changing the constants in the thread. I’m talking about stock oem non-reman trans. I can’t vouch for anyone that opens up a trans or the quality of work that was done. I had RP in my non-reman trans for 6 years (actually by mistake because my shop screwed up and didn’t listen to what I wanted.) didn’t have a single problem. Perhaps your reman trans had issues and therefore needed some very specific fluid to work correctly.

You raise a valid point and worth mentioning so that it can be part of the forum record for others to discover. FWIW, RP is the only fluid I have tried that has not worked swimmingly in DD and track-day duty.

yeah I hear ya. That’s why I went to the lengths I did to get gm’s recommendation. They told me dex vi only. Maybe the manufacturer is the expert after all. Lol. For what it’s worth, the tech that did the fluid swap for me said he wouldn’t do the job unless I had dex vi. Says something about the other fluids people use.
