You need codes to fix this. Search how to pull the codes. Hint: You use the instrument cluster

1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "reset" button to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold "options" and
4) While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-Second period.

The codes will begin to flash across the display. Anything with a "-C" suffix is a current code. List those out and I'm sure someone can provide a fix.

Clear them all and drive the car to see what comes back.

but I’m guessing 1287 is your problem. Need a new steering sensor.

See if the car jerks to one side when the activity handling light comes up. Tell tale sign of a bad sensor. Hopefully your car is 2001 or newer.

  • 28-TCS, C1287 H, C1288 H
  • C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction
  • C1287 Steering Sensor Rate Malfunction
Looks like your Steering wheel Position Sensor is failing. Common problem.
What year is your car? SWPS is not available for older models. Newer models part is about $65 but it's a PITA to replace
Suggest you unplug the sensor at the base of steering column until you get it replaced. Can cause some unexpected jurks on the brakes.

Good luck

^ Yep except you can check and clear codes with the engine running, I've done it many times.

There is a current post showing a member using some electrical cleaning spray on his sensor and it working out pretty well.
You might do a search and find it and give it a shot.
Might work for you and save you a lot of money.
Might not too!
It cost me around $600 to have my SWPS changed out.
Good luck!

Have a shop replace the steering sensor. It’ll cost some money but it’s worth it. Unless your a well versed mechanic don’t attempt this.
